Article 00-17-4 is being republished in its entirety as part of a consolidated 7.3L diagnostic aid booklet.
ISSUE
Vehicles equipped with 7.3L DIT engine built after Engine Serial Number (ESN) 896812 may have an Injection Control Pressure (ICP) oil aeration reading that is higher than the specification. This is due to a change in calibration of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and high pressure/low mass poppet fuel injectors.
ACTION
Perform the Injection Pressure Test as described in the Performance Diagnostic Sheet (found in the 7.3L Power stroke Diesel Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis Manual) using 1800 PSI as the maximum allowable value (Step 10a).
Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Verify proper oil level.
2. Using scan tool (New Generation Star) tester, monitor ICP and engine RPM. Run engine at 3400 RPM for 3 minutes. Note the ICP number at the end of the 3 minute period.
NOTE
1800 PSI SPECIFICATION IS FOR ENGINES BUILT AFTER ESN 896812.
3. If the ICP number increases above 1800 PSI and the vehicle has an ESN number higher than 896812, the oil anti-foaming additives may have been depleted. Change the engine oil or add anti-foaming additives and retest.
4. If ICP is still above specification, perform normal diagnostics and service.
