Initial Inspection - Instrument Cluster

1. Verify the customer concern by operating the system.
2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

3. Verify the following Systems are working correctly:
^ charging
^ fuel delivery
^ cooling
^ safety belt warning chime (GEM)
^ turn signals
^ headlamps
^ anti-theft
^ vehicle speed control (if equipped)

If a particular system(s) is not working correctly, refer to that system(s).

4. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause before proceeding to the next step.
5. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the scan tool menu. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
^ check that the program card or disk is correctly installed.
^ check the connections to the vehicle.
^ check the ignition switch position.
6. If the scan tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the scan tool operating manual.
7. Carry out the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST. If the scan tool responds with:
^ CKT914, CKT915 or CKT7O = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, refer to Module Communications Network (Information Bus).
^ NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Generic Electronic Module (GEM), go to Pinpoint Test A or for compuvalve, go to Pinpoint Test AE. Test A: No Communication With the Generic Electronic Module (GEM)/Central Timer Module (CTM) Tests AE: No Communication With the Compuvalve - Bi-Fuel Only
^ SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record the continuous Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out self-test diagnostics for the GEM or the compuvalve.
