Fuel Tank: Description and Operation
The Mechanical, Returnless Fuel System (MRFS) consists of:^ the fuel tank
^ the fuel tank filler pipe which contains a restrictor plate to permit only an unleaded fuel nozzle to be inserted
^ a 1/8 turn fuel tank filler cap
^ a fuel filter providing filtration to protect the fuel injectors
^ fuel line
^ a fuel pump and sender assembly containing:
- the electric fuel pump which provides pressurized fuel to the engine
- the fuel level sensor
- a check valve to maintain system pressure after the pump is shut off
- a pressure relief valve in the electric fuel pump for overpressure protection in the event of restricted fuel flow
- the fuel pressure regulator
The fuel pump is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) which energizes the fuel pump relay. Electrical power to the pump is provided through the Inertia Fuel Shutoff (IFS) switch. The IFS switch is located on the toe board to the left of the right-hand kick panel.
