Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
Cylinder Head
Removal
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Remove the lower intake manifold.
3. Remove the A/C compressor.
4. Remove the Generator (GEN).
5. Remove the power steering pump.
6. Remove the generator mounting bracket.
7. Remove the rocker arms and the push rods.
8. Remove the two bolts from the rear of the A/C compressor mounting bracket.
9. Remove the bolts and remove the front of the A/C compressor mounting bracket.
10. Raise and support the vehicle.
10. Remove the exhaust manifolds.
12. Remove and discard the eight cylinder head bolts.
13. Remove the cylinder heads.
14. Remove and discard the cylinder head gaskets.
Installation
1. Clean all the sealing surfaces.
2. Check the cylinder head for flatness.
3. NOTE: The "V" notch in the head gasket faces the front of the engine.
Install new cylinder head gasket.
4. Install the cylinder heads.
5. Install the bolts.
- Tighten the bolts in five stages in the sequence shown.
1 Tighten the bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
2 Loosen the bolts one full turn.
3 Tighten the bolts to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
4 Tighten the bolts 90°.
5 Tighten the bolts an additional 90°.
6. Install the lower intake manifold.
7. Install the exhaust manifolds.
8. Install the A/C compressor mounting bracket.
- Install the front bolts.
- Install the two rear bolts.
9. Install the push rods and the rocker arms.
10. Install the generator mounting bracket.
- Install the bolts.
11. Install the power steering pump.
12. Install the generator.
13. Install the A/C compressor.
14. Connect the battery ground cable.
15. Drain the engine oil.
16. Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
17. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
18. Fill the power steering system.
19. Charge the A/C system.
