2001 RANGER
ISSUE
Some vehicles equipped with a 3.0L engine and 5R44E automatic transmission produced 08/08/2000 through 06/18/2001 may exhibit a delayed reverse engagement. This may be caused by the calibration of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
ACTION
Verify the condition. If normal diagnostics cannot pinpoint the condition, reprogram the PCM with the latest level calibration. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Verify that the reverse engagement is delayed. Prior to performing any service procedures, verify tear tag information. Refer to the PCM Calibration Information Chart as shown. If the calibration is not at the latest level, follow the procedures found in the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Workshop Manual to reprogram the PCM to latest calibration level. Verify repair. If the condition is not corrected, continue with normal diagnostics and repair per the Workshop Manual.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
