Clutch: Service and Repair
CLUTCH SYSTEM BLEEDINGMaterials
CAUTION: Brake fluid is harmful to painted or plastic surfaces. If the brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, wash it immediately with water.
NOTE: An assistant will be needed for this procedure.
1. Fill the reservoir to the fill line.
^ Keep the reservoir 3/4 full or higher during the bleeding procedure.
^ Use DOT 3 brake fluid.
2. Place the reservoir in a vise.
3. Position the clutch master cylinder with the reservoir above the clutch master cylinder and the quick connect fitting below the clutch master cylinder. The clutch master cylinder reservoir post should be pointed upward at a 45 degree angle.
4. Depress the internal mechanism of the male quick connect coupler to open the valve.
^ Position a clear container under the quick connect coupler.
5. Push the clutch master cylinder push rod in and out until a solid stream is noted flowing from the quick connector coupler.
6. Release the male quick coupler valve.
7. Using short quick strokes, push the master cylinder push rod in and out 10 to 20 times or until the push rod is firm.
^ This allows air in the system to escape through the reservoir.
8. Install the clutch master cylinder assembly.
9. Depress and release the clutch pedal several times to stabilize the clutch hydraulic system.
10. Fill the brake/clutch master cylinder to the fill line.
11. Raise and support the vehicle.
12. Remove the bleeder screw cover and attach a vinyl hose to the bleeder hose. Place the other end of the vinyl hose into a clear container partially filled with brake fluid.
^ Use DOT 3 brake fluid.
13. Have an assistance depress and release the clutch pedal five times, then hold the clutch pedal down. With the clutch pedal depressed, loosen the bleeder screw to let air escape the clutch system. Tighten the bleeder screw. Repeat this process until no air comes the vinyl hose.
14. Tighten the bleeder screw and install the bleeder screw cover.
15. Slowly pump the clutch pedal several times to verify there is not fluid leakage.
^ Depress and release the clutch pedal five short cycles, and two full-travel cycles.
16. Carry out the following final checks:
^ Check the clutch pedal is at the top of travel.
^ Check for correct operation of the clutch system.
^ Make sure the clutch reservoir is at the correct level.
^ Use DOT 3 brake fluid.
