Auxiliary Transmission Fluid Cooler
Removal
Vehicles equipped with 4R100 transmission
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. CAUTION: Install a new inline transmission fluid filter (XC3Z-7B155-BA) every 48,000 km (30,000 miles) and always as part of a transmission overhaul or exchange. If the vehicle was not equipped with an inline fluid filter install a new inline transmission fluid filter kit (XC3Z-7B155-AA) according to the instructions supplied with the kit as part of a transmission overhaul or exchange.
NOTE: The inline transmission fluid filter, if so equipped, is attached to the fluid cooler return tube. The fluid cooler return tube runs from the auxiliary transmission fluid cooler to the rear transmission cooler tube case fitting.
Remove and discard the inline transmission fluid filter, if so equipped.
3. If not done previously, carry out the transmission fluid cooler flow test procedure.
4. Lower the vehicle.
All vehicles
5. Remove the radiator grille opening panel reinforcement.
6. Disconnect the fluid cooler hoses from the auxiliary transmission fluid cooler.
7. Remove the auxiliary transmission fluid cooler.
Installation
All vehicles
1. Install the auxiliary transmission fluid cooler.
2. Connect the fluid cooler hoses to the auxiliary transmission fluid cooler. Install the hose clamps.
Vehicles with 4R100 transmission
3. Raise and support the vehicle.
4. CAUTION: Install a new inline transmission fluid filter (XC3Z-7B155-BA) every 48,000 km (30,000 miles) and always as part of a transmission overhaul or exchange. If the vehicle was not equipped with an inline fluid filter install a new inline transmission fluid filter kit (XC3Z-7B155-AA) according to the instructions supplied with the kit as part of a transmission overhaul or exchange.
CAUTION: Failure to follow the instructions supplied with the inline transmission fluid filter kit can cause transmission damage.
CAUTION: Verify that the flow arrow on the filter points toward the transmission.
Install a new inline transmission fluid filter (XC3Z-7B155-13A). If the vehicle was not equipped with an inline fluid filter, install a new inline transmission fluid filter kit (XC3Z-7B155-AA) according to the instructions supplied with the kit. Carry out the transmission fluid cooler flow test procedure to verify that there is correct fluid flow through the new inline fluid filter.
5. Lower the vehicle.
All vehicles
6. Install the radiator grille opening panel reinforcement.
Vehicles with 4R100 transmission
7. CAUTION: MERCON(R) Automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON(R) V as a service fluid, per TSB 06-14-4.
Fill the transmission with the specified type and quantity of transmission fluid.
- Use Motorcraft MERCON V Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-5-QM or equivalent meeting MERCON V specifications.
Vehicles with 4R70W transmission
8. Fill the transmission with the specified type and quantity of transmission fluid.
All vehicles
9. Check for leaks.
