1. WARNING: On vehicles equipped with an auxiliary battery, or two batteries, both the negative and positive battery cables must be disconnected.

NOTE: All gasoline vehicles will have new adaptive shift strategies. Whenever the vehicle's battery has been disconnected for any type of service or repairs, the strategy parameters that are stored in the Keep Alive Memory (KAM) will be lost. The strategy will start to relearn once the battery is reconnected and the vehicle is driven. This is a temporary condition and will return to normal operating condition once the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearns all the parameters from the driving operating conditions. There is no time frame set for this process. If a concern is present during down shifts or converter clutch apply, it is not the shift strategy and will require diagnosis.
The customer needs to be notified that they may experience slightly different upshifts (either soft or firm) and that this condition is temporary and will eventually return to normal operating condition.

Disconnect the battery ground cables.
2. Remove the air cleaner air intake duct assembly.





3. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.





All gas applications
5. Remove the vapor management valve assembly and position it aside.





All applications
6. Remove the bolt form the bracket and position it aside.





7. Remove the and the fluid filler tube from the short fluid inlet tube, and secure it aside.





Vehicles equipped with 7.3L diesel engine
8. Remove the fluid level indicator bracket nut.





9. Remove the fluid level indicator tube from the short fluid inlet tube and position it aside.





All applications
10. Disconnect the electrical harness connectors.





11. NOTE: As the bolts are removed, note the length of each bolt for correct location during installation.

Remove the transmission-to-engine retaining bolts.
12. Raise and support the vehicle.
13. Remove the driveshaft.
14. If equipped, remove the transmission-mounted parking brake assembly.





15. Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).





16. Disconnect the TR sensor connector.





17. If equipped, remove the heat shield.





18. Disconnect the solenoid body connector.





19. Disconnect the shift cable at the transmission and position it aside.
20. Remove the starter motor.





21. Remove the cylinder block opening cover.





22. Remove and discard the torque converter-to-flexplate retaining nuts.





Vehicles equipped with 7.3L diesel engine
23. Remove the five bolts and the flexplate inspection cover.





24. Remove and discard the torque converter-to-flexplate retaining nuts.





All vehicles

25. CAUTION: Be sure not to raise the back of the transmission too high. If it makes contact with the underbo0y, damage to the TSS sensor can occur.

Install the high lift transmission jack with the special tool to the transmission.





26. Remove the rear transmission mount nuts.





Vehicles equipped with 7.3L diesel engine
27. Remove the heat shields.





All vehicles
28. Remove the transmission support crossmember.





Vehicles equipped with 7.3L diesel engine
29. Disconnect the fluid cooler tubes at the Cooler Bypass Valve (CBV). Plug all fittings and position the tubes aside.





All vehicles
30. Disconnect the fluid cooler tubes at the Cooler Bypass Valve (CBV). Plug all fittings and position the tubes aside.





Vehicles equipped with 7.3L diesel engine

31. NOTE: This bolt will remain in the converter housing due to proximity of the exhaust pipe.

Remove the RH transmission-to-engine bolt.





32. Remove the LH transmission-to-engine bolt.





All vehicles
33. Remove the flexplate inspection cover.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Remove the flexplate inspection cover.





34. Remove the transmission-to-engine bolts.





35. CAUTION: Use care while removing the transmission to avoid damage to the TSS sensor.

CAUTION: Do not use the cooler bypass valve as a handle. Damage to the cooler bypass valve assembly may occur or damage to the case may result.

CAUTION: Use a safety strap to hold the transmission to the high lift transmission jack. Place the strap behind the Cooler Bypass Valve (CBV) to prevent damage to the cooler bypass valve.

Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
- Move the transmission extension housing with a slight side-to-side motion to separate the transmission from the engine and the torque converter from the flexplate.





36. NOTE: Fluid loss will occur when the torque converter is removed.

Using the special tools, remove the torque converter from the transmission.
