Automatic Transmission - 4R100General Specifications
Fluid Capacity
a Actual quantities will vary a few ounces based on applications. Always use the fluid level indicator setting the correct level.
CAUTION: Using a transmission fluid that indicates a dual usage MERCON and MERCON V in a transmission application requiring MERCON, may cause transmission damage. Use of any fluid other than the recommended fluid may cause transmission damage.
NOTE: Refer to the transmission fluid level indicator and the Owner's Guide for the type of transmission fluid required. Some fluid labels may indicate dual usage such as MERCON and MERCON V. These dual-usage fluids are not to be used in transmissions that use only the MERCON-type fluid. These dual-usage fluids may be used in transmissions that require MERCON V use.
NOTE: Always use the transmission fluid level indicator to check and set the correct level of the transmission fluid.
The above fluid capacities are approximate dry fill capacity and include fluid coolers and fluid cooler tubes. Fluid level indicator should be used to determine actual fluid requirement and fluid specifications. Check level at operating temperature. DO NOT OVERFILL.
The transmission fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles (48,000 km) regardless of normal or special operating conditions.
Once the vehicle is equipped with the in-line transmission fluid filter, the filter should be replaced every 30,000 miles (48,000 km). The in-line transmission fluid filter should be replaced during any transmission overhaul, exchanges, repair or if internal contamination is present. If the vehicle is equipped with a in-line transmission fluid filter the filter only needs to be replaced. If the vehicle is not equipped with a in-line transmission fluid filter a-new in-line transmission fluid filter kit should be installed.
Clutch Plate Usage and Clearance Specification
a Plus one apply plate.
b A non-selective snap ring.
c Plus a steel wave cushion spring installed between the front pressure plate and a steel separator plate.
d Plus a steel wave cushion spring installed between the reverse clutch piston and a steel separator plate.
Applications Shift Speeds - Approximate* Km/h (MPH) (E-1 50, E-250, E-350 with 5AL) (Under 8500 GVW Rating)
NOTE: All gasoline, applications have new adaptive shift strategies. Whenever the vehicles battery has been disconnected for any type of service or r1epairs the strategy parameters that are stored in the Keep Alive Memory (KAM) will be lost. The strategy will start to relearn once the battery is reconnected and the vehicle is driven. This is a temporary condition and will return to normal operating condition once the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearns all the parameters from the driving conditions. There is no time frame set for this process. If this concern is present during down shifts or converter clutch apply, it is not the shift strategy and will require diagnosis.
The customer needs to be notified that they may experience slightly different upshifts either soft or firm and that this condition is temporary and will eventually return to normal operating condition.
