Disc Brake System: Service and Repair

Brake Disc Runout Check





Special Tool(s)
1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.





2. Tighten the spindle nut to eliminate all end play from the front wheel bearing. Be sure the brake disc can turn.





3. Attach the Dial Indicator Gauge with Holding Fixture to the vehicle suspension. The stylus of the indicator should touch the surface of the brake disc approximately 25.4 mm (1.01 inch) from the outer edge of the brake disc.





4. Adjust the Dial Indicator Gauge with Holding Fixture to mid travel. Zero the scale on the dial indicator. Slowly turn the brake disc one complete turn and note the high and low readings on the dial.
5. If the brake disc runout is not within specification, either refinish or install a new brake disc.
^ Refinish the brake disc.
^ Install a new front brake disc.
^ Install a new rear brake disc.
6. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
