Camshaft Timing
NOTE: Ford does not provide timing marks or additional information for servicing of the timing chains/sprockets without the special tools listed in this procedure.
Timing Drive Components: Camshaft Timing
Special Tool(s)
1. Remove the LH valve cover.
2. Remove the RH valve cover.
3. Remove the intake manifold.
4. Remove the fuel supply manifold.
5. Remove the accessory drive belt.
6. Remove the thermostat housing.
7. Remove the roller followers.
8. NOTE: You must retime the LH and RH camshafts when either camshaft is disturbed.
Turn the crankshaft clockwise to position the number one cylinder at TDC.
9. NOTE: The special tool must be installed on the damper and should contact the engine block, this positions the engine at Top Dead Center (TDC).
Install the special tool.
10. CAUTION: The right-hand camshaft sprocket bolt is a left-hand threaded bolt.
Using the special tool, loosen the RH camshaft sprocket bolt.
11. NOTE: The camshaft timing slots are off-center.
Position the camshaft timing slots below the centerline of the camshaft to correctly fit the special tools and install the special tools on the front of the RH cylinder head.
12. Raise and support the vehicle.
13. Remove the RH wheel and tire.
14. Remove the RH lower splash shield.
15. Remove the RH camshaft tensioner.
16. Lower the vehicle.
17. NOTE: Leave the top two special tool clamp bolts loose.
Install the special tools on the rear of the RH cylinder head.
18. Install the special tool.
19. CAUTION: The right-hand camshaft sprocket bolt is a left-hand threaded bolt.
Tighten the bolts.
1 Tighten the special tool top two clamp bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
2 Tighten the camshaft bolt.
20. Remove the special tool.
21. Install the RH camshaft tensioner.
22. Raise the vehicle.
23. Install the RH lower splash shield.
24. Install the RH wheel and tire.
25. Lower the vehicle.
26. Remove the special tools from the RH cylinder head.
27. Remove the LH camshaft tensioner.
28. Install the special tools on the front of the LH cylinder head and tighten the top two clamp bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
29. Loosen the LH camshaft sprocket bolt.
30. Loosen the top two clamp bolts on the special tool to allow the camshaft sprocket to rotate freely.
31. NOTE: The camshaft timing slots are off-center.
Position the camshaft timing slots below the centerline of the camshaft to correctly fit the special tools, and install the special tools on the rear of the LH cylinder head.
32. Install the special tool.
33. Tighten the bolts.
1 Tighten the special tool top two clamp bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
2 Tighten the camshaft bolt.
34. Remove the special tool.
35. Install the LH camshaft tensioner.
36. Remove all of the special tools.
37. Install the roller followers.
38. Install the thermostat housing.
39. Install the accessory drive belt.
40. Install the fuel supply manifold.
41. Install the lower intake manifold.
42. Install the RH valve cover.
43. Install the LH valve cover.
