Removal

Transmission

Special Tools:





Special Tool(s)

All vehicles
1. Position the vehicle on a hoist. Place in NEUTRAL.

2. NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms can occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The customer needs to be notified that they may experience slightly different upshifts (either soft or firm) and that this is temporary and will eventually return to normal operating condition.

Disconnect the battery ground cable.

4x4 vehicles
3. Remove the transfer case.





4. NOTE: To maintain initial driveshaft balance' mark the front driveshaft yoke and flange so they can be installed in their original location.

Remove the front driveshaft.
1 Remove the four front driveshaft flange bolts.
2 Remove the front driveshaft.

4x2 vehicles
5. Remove the rear driveshaft.

All vehicles
6. If disassembly of the transmission or installation of a new transmission is required, drain the transmission fluid.





Vehicles equipped with a fluid pan drain plug
7. Remove the fluid pan drain plug and allow the fluid to drain.





8. Install the fluid drain plug.





Vehicles not equipped with a fluid pan drain plug

9. NOTE: Do not discard the fluid pan gasket unless damaged. This is a reusable gasket.

Remove the transmission fluid pan and gasket.
1 Loosen, but do not remove the bolts.
2 Remove the front and side bolts.
3 Lower the front of the fluid pan and allow the fluid to drain.
4 Remove the remaining fluid pan bolts and the fluid pan.





10. NOTE: Do not discard the gasket unless damaged. This is a reusable gasket.

NOTE: Apply a light coat of petroleum jelly to hold the gasket in place in the fluid pan.

Position the gasket onto the clean fluid pan. Make sure the magnet is positioned over the dimple in the fluid pan.





11. Install the pan with the gasket. Alternately tighten the bolts.





All vehicles
12. Remove the plastic cover from the starter motor electrical connector.





13. Disconnect the starter motor electrical connectors.





14. Remove the starter motor.
1 Remove the stud bolt.
2 Remove the two bolts.
3 Remove the starter.





15. Remove the flexplate inspection cover.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Remove the flexplate inspection cover.





16. Remove the torque converter access cover.





17. Remove and discard the four torque converter nuts.





4x4 vehicles
18. CAUTION: Make sure any securing straps do not touch the Cooler Bypass Valve (CBV). Do not use the CBV as a handle. Damage to the CBV can cause a leak and/or a failure to the transmission assembly.

Using a suitable transmission jack, support the transmission.
1 Position a suitable transmission jack and secure the transmission to it with a safety strap.
2 Remove the jack stand.





4x2 vehicles

19. CAUTION: Make sure any securing straps do not touch the Cooler Bypass Valve (CBV). Do not use the CBV as a handle. Damage to the CBV can cause a leak and/or a failure to the transmission assembly.

Using a suitable transmission jack, support the transmission and secure the transmission to it with a safety strap.





20. Remove the two exhaust heat shield-to-crossmember bolts (one on each side).





21. Loosen, but do not remove the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts.





22. Remove the six crossmember-to-frame nuts and bolts (three on each side).





23. Remove the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts, and remove the crossmember.





24. Remove the transmission mount and the exhaust hanger.





All vehicles
25. Disconnect the shift cable from the transmission.
1 Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever.
2 Disconnect the cable housing from the bracket and position aside.





26. Disconnect the Digital Transmission (TR) sensor connector.





27. Disconnect the turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor and the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor.





28. NOTE: The 4x4 is shown, the 4x2 is similar.

Remove the nut and disconnect the fuel line bracket.





29. Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler tubes from the Cooler Bypass Valve (CBV).





30. Disconnect the transmission wiring harness.
1 Disconnect the solenoid body connector.
2 Disconnect the HEGO sensor connector.
3 Disconnect the two harness routing clips.





31. Lower the transmission to gain access to the retaining bolts.
1 Remove the seven bolts.
2 Gently rock the transmission side-to-side to disengage it from the locator dowels.
3 Move the transmission and the transmission jack rearward to clear the flexplate, and partially lower the transmission.





32. Disconnect the wire harness routing clip at the top of the transmission.





33. WARNING: The torque converter is heavy and can result in injury if it falls out of the transmission.

NOTE: If the torque converter falls out of the transmission and is dropped, the installation of a new torque converter will be necessary.

Using the special tool, secure the torque converter to the transmission





34. CAUTION: Use care while removing the transmission to avoid obstructions.

CAUTION: Do not use the CBV as a handle, damage to the CBV assembly or the transmission case can occur.

NOTE: The front of the transmission will need to be lowered in order for the transmission to clear the exhaust system during removal.

Tilt the front of the transmission down and lower the transmission from the vehicle.
^ Continue moving the transmission rearward, while gradually lowering the front of the transmission. As the transmission jack is being lowered, move the transmission forward and remove it from the vehicle.

35. Carry out the transmission fluid cooler-backflushing and cleaning procedure if a new transmission is being installed or overhauled.
