9. Exhaust Restriction

9. Exhaust Restriction

Purpose:

The purpose of this test is to determine if an exhaust system restriction is causing a performance problem.

Exhaust Restriction

^ Visually inspect the exhaust system for damage.
^ Monitor the exhaust pressure using the gauge 0-1100 kPa (0-160 psi) Bar 014- 00761 or equivalent (part of DSL ENG Pressure Test Kit 014-00761 or equivalent) and the engine oil temperature greater than 80°C (176°F) at 3,800 RPM with the vehicle in park or neutral.

Recommended Procedure:

^ Connect the Gauge 0-1100 kPa (0-160 psi) Bar 014-00761 or equivalent (part of DSL ENG Pressure Test Kit 014-00761 or equivalent).
^ Access and monitor the RPM PID
^ Increase the engine speed to 3800 RPM.
^ Record the exhaust pressure gauge value.
^ A low RPM or an exhaust pressure greater than 244 kPa (35 psi) indicates a restricted exhaust condition.

Possible Causes:

^ Collapsed or restricted tail pipe
^ Clogged catalytic converter
^ Damaged muffler
^ Turbocharger

Tools Required:
