Removal

All vehicles
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

Vehicles equipped with A/C
2. Remove the radiator grille support.
3. Discharge and recover the air conditioning system.
4. Remove the A/C condenser core (19712).

All vehicles
5. Remove the radiator, fan shroud and engine cooling fan.





6. Disconnect the 42-pin and the 16-pin connectors and remove the nut and the harness mounting bracket.
7. Remove the intake manifold.





8. At the oil cooler inlet, disconnect and set aside the lower radiator hose.





9. Remove the bolts and position the power steering pump aside.

Vehicles equipped with A/C





10. Disconnect the connector and position the harness aside.





11. Disconnect the A/C cycling switch.
^ Remove the harness from the spuds and position aside.





12. Disconnect the suction hose at the accumulator.
13. Remove the A/C compressor.

All vehicles





14. Remove the nuts.





15. Disconnect the left and right Heated Exhaust Gas Oxygen (HEGO) sensor connectors.
16. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil bypass filter.





17. Loosen the threaded insert and position the oil cooler to access the coolant hoses.





18. CAUTION: A new oil cooler must be installed or severe damage to the engine can result.

Disconnect the coolant hoses and remove the oil cooler.
19. Remove the starter motor.





20. Remove the bolts and position the transmission oil cooler tubes and bracket aside.





21. Remove the stud bolt and position the ground strap aside.





22. Remove the nut and position the wiring bracket aside.

Automatic transmission vehicles
23. Remove the flywheel inspection cover.





24. Remove the access plug.





25. Remove and discard the four torque converter bolts.





26. Remove the four lower transmission-to-engine bolts.

All vehicles





27. Remove the nut retaining the ground strap and remove the transmission oil filler tube.





28. Disconnect the heater hose at the rear of the engine.





29. Remove the two studs and the heater tube.





30. Remove the three upper transmission-to-engine bolts.





31. Install the Modular Engine Lift Bracket and support the engine with a suitable floor crane.





32. Remove the engine support insulator nuts.
33. Support the transmission with a jack.
34. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
