Warning Devices
WARNING DEVICESThe warning device system consists of the following:
- key-in-ignition warning switch
- door open warning lamp switch
- air bag warning chime
- headlamps on warning chime
- driver and passenger safety belt minder switch (integral to the safety belt buckle)
- vehicle security module
PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
The instrument cluster, vehicle security module, and the restraint control module (RCM) control the following warnings and chimes:
- driver safety belt not fastened (warning lamp and repetitive chime)
- key-in-ignition warning (repetitive chime)
- headlamp-on warning (repetitive chime)
- door ajar (warning lamp and single tone)
- air bag redundant (repetitive chime)
The following 5 distinct chime rates are used to indicate warning:
- driver safety belt warning chime is one chime per second
- key-in-ignition warning is 2 chimes per second
- headlamp-on warning is 4 chimes per second
- door ajar warning is a single chime
- air bag redundant is 5 chimes per second
Safety Belt Warning Chime
The safety belt warning chime warns the driver safety belt is not fastened. The safety belt warning chime sounds when the driver safety belt is not fastened and when the ignition switch is turned from the OFF/LOCK or ACC to the RUN or START position. The safety belt warning chime stops sounding when:
- the safety belt is fastened.
- the ignition switch is switched from the RUN or START to the OFF/LOCK or ACC position.
- the chime has sounded for 6 seconds.
The safety belt warning chime inputs are:
- ignition switch position
- driver safety belt switch (grounded when not fastened, open circuit when fastened)
Belt Minder
NOTE: The belt minder feature is configurable. To configure using the diagnostic tool, refer to Information Bus (Module Communications Network). To configure without using the diagnostic tool, refer to Safety Belt Minder Deactivating/Activating.
The belt minder feature supplements the current safety belt warning function. The belt minder feature is enabled after the current safety belt warning is complete. If the driver safety belt is not buckled approximately 5 seconds after the safety belt warning light has turned off, the belt minder reminds the driver that their safety belt is unbuckled by intermittently sounding a chime and illuminating the safety belt warning lamp in the instrument cluster. While activated, the belt minder alternates the chime and indicator from on for 6 seconds to off for 30 seconds.
The belt minder reminder stops when:
- the driver safety belt is buckled.
- the ignition switch is turned to the OFF or ACC position.
- 5 minutes have elapsed since the belt minder has started.
Door Ajar Warning Chime
The door ajar warning chime warns that a door has become ajar. The door ajar warning chime is a single tone with the duration of 1 second. The tone sounds when the driver or passenger door initially becomes ajar while the ignition switch is in the RUN position.
The door ajar inputs are:
- ignition switch position
- door ajar switches (open circuit with door closed, grounded with door ajar)
Key-In-Ignition Warning Chime
The key-in-ignition warning chime warns that the key is still in the ignition lock cylinder when the driver door is ajar. The key-in-ignition warning chime sounds when:
- driver door is ajar, the ignition switch is in the OFF/LOCK or ACC position, and the key is in the ignition lock cylinder.
The key-in-ignition warning chime stops sounding when:
- the driver door is closed.
- the key is removed from the ignition lock cylinder.
- the ignition switch is moved to the RUN position.
The key-in-ignition warning chime inputs are:
- ignition switch position
- key-in-ignition switch (grounded with key-in-ignition, open circuit key-out)
- LH door ajar switch (open circuit with door closed, grounded with door ajar)
Headlamps Warning Chime
The headlamps warning chime warns that the headlamps are on when all the following conditions are met:
- The driver door is ajar.
- The headlamp switch position is in the PARK or HEAD position.
- The ignition switch is in the OFF/LOCK position.
- The key is out of the ignition lock cylinder.
The headlamps warning chime stops sounding when any one of the conditions above are removed.
The headlamps warning chime inputs are:
- ignition switch position
- headlamp switch position
- driver door ajar switch (open circuit with door closed, grounded with door ajar)
- key-in-ignition switch (grounded with key-in-ignition, open circuit with key-out)
Air Bag Redundant Chime
The air bag redundant chime warns that the air bag warning indicator is inoperative or an active fault is present within the air bag system. The audible warning format will consists of 5 sets of tones in 1 second increments.
