EngineSpecial Tool(s)
Material
CAUTION: Remove the cylinder heads before removing the crankshaft. Failure to do so can result in engine damage.
CAUTION: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
NOTE: The flexplate, crankshaft rear seal and the crankshaft rear oil slinger must be removed before mounting the engine on the engine stand.
1. Remove the engine.
2. Remove the bolts and the flexplate.
3. CAUTION: Do not use the oil pan to support the engine.
Lower and support the engine assembly on wood blocks.
4. Using the special tools, remove the crankshaft rear oil slinger.
5. Using the special tools, remove the crankshaft rear seal.
6. Remove the bolts and the crankshaft rear seal retainer plate.
^ CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.
Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces.
7. CAUTION: Do not use the oil pan to support the engine.
Lower and support the engine assembly on wood blocks.
8. Remove the special tool.
9. Install the engine assembly onto a suitable engine stand.
10. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
11. Disconnect the RH radio ignition interference capacitor electrical connector.
12. Remove the nut and the RH radio ignition interference capacitor.
13. Disconnect the electrical connector retainer from the coolant tube support bracket.
14. Disconnect the 10 ignition coil electrical connectors.
15. Remove the 10 bolts and the 10 ignition coils.
16. Disconnect the cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor electrical connector.
17. Disconnect the engine oil pressure (EOP) sensor electrical connector.
18. Remove the nut and the LH radio ignition interference capacitor.
19. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
20. Disconnect the engine harness retainers and remove the engine wiring harness from the engine assembly.
21. Remove the rear oil level indicator tube bolt.
22. Remove the bolt and the oil level indicator tube
^ Discard the O-ring seal.
23. Remove the bolt and the CMP sensor.
24. Remove the bolt and the CKP sensor.
25. Remove the 10 nuts and the RH exhaust manifold.
^ Discard the gasket.
26. Remove the 10 nuts and the LH exhaust manifold.
^ Discard the gasket.
27. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.
NOTE: The bolts are part of the valve cover and should not be removed.
Loosen the 16 fasteners in the sequence shown and remove the RH valve cover and gasket.
^ Clean the valve cover mating surface of the cylinder head with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
^ Discard the valve cover gasket. Clean the valve cover gasket groove with soap and water or a suitable solvent.
Loosen the 17 fasteners in the sequence shown and remove the LH valve cover and gasket.
^ Clean the valve cover mating surface of the cylinder head with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
^ Discard the valve cover gasket. Clean the valve cover gasket groove with soap and water or a suitable solvent.
29. Remove the bolts, coolant pump pulley and accessory drive belt idler pulley.
30. Remove the bolts and the accessory drive belt tensioner.
31. Remove and discard the crankshaft pulley bolt. Using the special tool, remove the crankshaft pulley.
32. Using the special tool, remove the crankshaft seal.
33. Remove the front 4 oil pan bolts.
34. NOTE: Correct fastener location is essential for assembly procedure. Record fastener location.
Remove the fasteners.
35. Remove the engine front cover from the cylinder block.
36. CAUTION: Only use hand tools to loosen the camshaft sprocket bolt or damage may occur to the camshaft or camshaft sprocket.
Loosen and back-off the RH camshaft sprocket bolt 1 full turn.
37. CAUTION: Only use hand tools to loosen the camshaft sprocket bolt or damage may occur to the camshaft or camshaft sprocket.
Loosen the LH camshaft sprocket bolt.
38. NOTE: The balance shaft bearing caps must be installed in their original locations. Record camshaft bearing cap locations.
Remove the 6 bolts in the sequence shown, the 3 bearing caps and the balance shaft.
39. Remove the crankshaft sensor ring from the crankshaft.
