Principles of Operation
PRINCIPLES OF OPERATIONPower Locks
The power locking/unlocking feature requests all of the vehicle doors be locked or unlocked upon a customer request from any interior door lock control switch. Power locking and unlocking of the doors operates independently of the position of the ignition switch and vehicle speed. The power locking/unlocking feature locks all the doors when a lock request is provided from any door lock control switch. When the vehicle security module receives an unlock/lock command from any door lock control switch, the vehicle security module activates relays internal to the module to supply the correct voltage and grounds for the door lock actuators.
Power Unlock Inhibit
NOTE: This feature is not enabled when the vehicle is delivered to the customer. If the customer requests this feature, the module can be configured to enable this feature.
With the key in the OFF position, 20 seconds after electrically locked (remote keyless entry [RKE] transmitter, RKE keypad, door lock control switch locked with door ajar) and all doors are closed, the door lock control switch UNLOCK button is disabled if this feature is enabled. The lock function still operates.
Deactivating/Activating Power Door Unlock Switch Inhibit
NOTE: The power door unlock switch inhibit feature needs to be enabled to perform the deactivating/activating power door unlock switch inhibit procedure.
This is customer configured. Steps 1 through 3 must be completed within 30 seconds.
1. Turn the key to the ON position, then press UNLOCK 3 times.
2. Turn the key to the OFF position, then press UNLOCK 3 times.
3. Turn the key to the ON position and within 5 seconds press LOCK 2 times.
The horn chirps twice to indicate the system has been disabled or chirps twice followed by a horn honk to indicate the system has been enabled.
Pressing LOCK 2 times again toggles the door lock control switch inhibit feature state.
Turn the key to the OFF position to exit the programming mode.
This feature can also be enabled/disabled using a diagnostic tool.
Autolock
The autolock feature locks all doors when all of these conditions are met:
- the key is in the RUN/START position
- the vehicle speed is less than 8 km/h (5 mph)
- all doors are closed
- the brake is applied and then released
- the vehicle speed reaches 8 km/h (5 mph) or higher
The relock feature locks all doors when all of these conditions are met:
- autolock has previously occurred
- the speed is below 8 km/h (5 mph)
- any door is opened with the brake pedal applied
- all doors are closed again
- the brake is released
- the vehicle speed reaches 8 km/h (5 mph) or higher
Autolock Enable/Disable - Using the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Keypad
A manual enable/disable mode allows the autolock feature to be turned off and on.
To enable or disable autolock using the RKE keypad:
1. Enter the 5-digit permanent entry code into the RKE keypad.
2. Within 5 seconds of entering the code, press and hold the 7/8 button on the RKE keypad.
3. Within 5 seconds of Step 2, and while holding the 7/8 button, press the 3/4 button on the RKE keypad and release it.
4. Within 5 seconds of Step 3, release the 7/8 button on the RKE keypad.
If the autolock feature is disabled, the horn chirps once. If the autolock feature is enabled, the horn chirps once shortly and then sounds a second time for a longer duration.
Autolock Enable/Disable - Using the Ignition Switch
Another way to turn the autolock feature off/on is by following this series of steps:
1. Close all doors.
2. Confirm that the key is in the OFF position.
3. NOTE: Steps 3 through 8 must be carried out within 30 seconds.
Turn the key from the OFF to the RUN position.
4. Press UNLOCK 3 times.
5. Turn the key from the RUN to the OFF position.
6. Press UNLOCK 3 times.
7. Turn the key from the OFF to the RUN position. The enable/disable mode is now ready to accept program changes.
8. Press UNLOCK once to command the vehicle security module to toggle the autolock/relock feature OFF.
9. Press LOCK once to enter the command.
10. Verify that the horn chirps 1 time. There should only be 1 chirp indicating that the autolock/relock feature has been disabled. If 1 chirp is heard followed by a longer sound of the horn, the autolock/relock feature has just been enabled. Return to Step 10.
11. Turn the key to the OFF position to exit the enable/disable mode.
Smart Unlocking
The smart unlocking feature prevents the driver door from locking with the key in the ignition. When the vehicle security module receives a LOCK command from a door lock control switch, and the key is in the ignition with the driver door open, the vehicle security module commands the driver door to unlock. The doors can be locked with the key in the ignition using either the RKE keypad or the RKE transmitter.
Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Transmitter Lock/Unlocking Control - Unlocking
The remote control feature provides lock/unlock functions independent of the ignition key position, vehicle speed, or the selected transmission gear. The remote control feature provides a 2-step process for unlocking the doors. Upon receipt of the first request for unlocking the doors, the remote control feature requests the vehicle security module to unlock the driver door only. If another unlock request is received within 3 seconds of the first, the remote control feature requests that all doors be unlocked.
Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Transmitter Lock/Unlocking Control - Locking
The remote control feature requests that all the doors be locked when the LOCK button is pressed. On any press of the lock button with all doors closed, the remote control feature requests 1 flash of the parking lamps. If any door is ajar, no flash occurs, indicating that all the doors were locked but 1 or more doors are ajar. As soon as the last door is closed, the vehicle provides 1 flash of the parking lamps. If 2 presses of the lock button are received within 3 seconds, the horn chirps once, and flashes the parking lamps twice to indicate that all the doors are closed and locked. If any door is ajar when the second lock request is received within 3 seconds of the first, the remote control feature requests the horn to chirp twice without flashing the parking lamps to indicate that all the doors were locked but 1 or more doors are ajar. When the key is in the RUN or START position, no parking lamp flashes or horn chirp confirmations occur.
Panic Alarm
The panic alarm feature controls activation of the panic alarm, providing audible and visual alarms that are evident from the exterior of the vehicle. The panic alarm feature requests that the parking lamps and horn flash until deactivation. The flashing of the outputs occurs simultaneously. Activation of the panic alarm is accomplished by pressing the PANIC button on an RKE transmitter whenever the key is on the OFF position. At all other times this feature is disabled. Deactivation of an active PANIC alarm is accomplished by: 1) a second press of the PANIC button, 2) the key is switched from the OFF or ACC position, or 3) a period of 2.75 minutes has elapsed since the initial activation.
Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Keypad
The RKE keypad is located on the exterior of the driver door and provides a method for the customer to access the vehicle without a key or RKE transmitter. The RKE keypad feature:
- locks all doors and inhibits the door lock control switch UNLOCK capability after 20 seconds (if the inhibit feature is enabled).
- unlocks only the driver door.
- unlocks all doors.
- programs/erases the customer key code.
- enables/disables the autolocking.
The RKE keypad feature operates independently of ignition status, vehicle speed, or transmission position. When a RKE keypad button is pressed, the RKE keypad buttons illuminate to provide better visibility. If LOCK ALL DOORS is entered or 5 seconds have elapsed since the last button press, the illumination is turned off.
Each vehicle equipped with a RKE keypad is programmed with a 5-digit entry code. This code is provided to the customer through a wallet card in the Owner Literature package. In addition, this code is available through a diagnostic tool and is also printed on the vehicle security module label. When entering codes each digit must be entered within 5 seconds of the previous button press.
Programming Personal Codes
A unique personal 5-digit code can be programmed by following these steps:
1. Enter the factory set 5-digit code (the RKE keypad will illuminate when pressed).
2. Press the 1/2 button within 5 seconds of Step 1.
3. Enter the unique 5-digit code.
The personal code does not substitute for the permanent factory set code. Either code can be used to access the vehicle. In addition, if a second personal code is programmed, it will simply overwrite the previous personal code.
Anti-Scan Feature
To provide added security, the RKE keypad is disabled for 1 minute after 35 button presses without a valid entry code being entered. The RKE keypad flashes during this 1-minute mode with all functionality disabled except for the 7/8 and 9/0 buttons still being allowed to lock the vehicle.
Anti-Scan turns off after any of the following events:
- 1 minute of RKE keypad inactivity
- the key is turned to the ON position
Unlocking the Doors with the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Keypad System
To unlock the driver door, enter either the factory set code or the personal code (each digit must be pressed within 5 seconds of the prior digit). The interior lamps will illuminate.
To unlock all doors, enter either the factory set code or the personal code (driver door unlocks) and press the 3/4 button within 5 seconds.
Locking the Doors with the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Keypad System
It is not necessary to enter the factory set or personal code prior to locking all doors. To lock all doors, press the 7/8 and 9/0 buttons at the same time.
