This article supersedes TSB 05-23-6 to update the Service Procedure.
ISSUE
Some 2006 Explorer 4dr/Mountaineer vehicles equipped with a 4.6L engine and a 6R60 6-speed automatic transmission, built through 12/12/2005, may exhibit a harsh or delayed 1-2, 2-1 and/or 3-2 shift.
ACTION
Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) and the transmission control module (TCM) to the latest calibration using WDS release B39.14 or higher or B40.2 and higher, then drive the vehicle following the Service Procedure in this TSB. Calibration files may also be obtained at the website.
NOTE
IF AFTER PERFORMING THIS TSB THE SHIFT CONCERN IS NOT RESOLVED, REFER TO SECTION 307-01 OF THE 2006 WORKSHOP MANUAL. FOLLOW "DIAGNOSIS BY SYMPTOM" ROUTINE 211, 213, OR 214 DEPENDING ON CUSTOMER SYMPTOM.
NOTE
REFER TO THE ONLINE WORKSHOP MANUALS FOR THE LATEST VERSION AVAILABLE.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Install WDS or equivalent and ID vehicle.
2. Update the PCM and TCM calibration using WDS release B39.14 or higher or B40.2 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the B40 CD. Since the TCM cannot be independently reprogrammed, reprogram the PCM to ensure that engine and transmission calibrations are updated to the latest level simultaneously.
3. To ensure that the vehicle is not in ALT-CAL mode, drive the vehicle for three (3) continuous miles.
4. Verify that the transmission fluid temperature (TFT) PID is above 175° F (80° C).
NOTE
"TFT" MUST BE AT 175° F (80° C) OR ABOVE BEFORE PROCEEDING TO STEP 5.
5. Clear TCM keep alive memory (KAM) and adaptive tables using the WDS.
NOTE
UNHOOKING THE BATTERY WILL NOT CLEAR THE TCM KAM.
NOTE
DO NOT CLEAR THE PCM KAM.
a. Open Toolbox
b. Choose Powertrain
c. Choose clear KAM
d. Then choose TCM
6. Accelerate from rest with light throttle. The 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 shifts must occur at engine speeds between 1300-1800 RPM.
7. Continue to accelerate gently to 50 MPH (80 Km/h) so that the transmission shifts into 6th gear.
8. Brake gently to a COMPLETE STOP and hold foot on brake for at least 15 seconds.
9. Repeat Steps 6-8 a total of five (5) times.
