Inspection and Verification
Inspection and VerificationCommunication Check
1. Verify the customer concern by applying the brakes under different conditions.
2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.
Visual Inspection Chart
Visual Inspection Chart:
3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
4. NOTE: Make sure to use the latest scan tool software release.
If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC).
5. NOTE: The vehicle communication module (VCM) LED prove out confirms power and ground from the DLC are provided to the VCM.
If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM:
^ check the VCM connection to the vehicle.
^ check the scan tool connection to the VCM.
^ refer to Information Bus (Module Communications Network), No Power To The Scan Tool, to diagnose no communication with the scan tool.
6. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
^ verify the ignition key is in the ON position.
^ verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle.
^ refer to Information Bus (Module Communications Network) to diagnose no response from the powertrain control module (PCM).
7. Carry out the network test.
^ If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, refer to Information Bus (Multiplex Communications Network).
^ If the network test passes, retrieve and record continuous memory diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
8. Clear the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the ABS module.
9. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart. For all other DTCs, refer to Body Control Systems (Multifunction Electronic Control Module). Anti-Lock Control
10. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to Symptom Chart. Anti-Lock Control
Inspection and Verification - Drive Cycle Test
The drive cycle test can be used as a system evaluation test or repair verification test, or during diagnosis (for intermittent concerns).
For system evaluation, the customer may only have a general concern about the way the vehicle is braking. There may not be a clear system concern to troubleshoot. This test is designed to produce common system concern symptoms. Once a symptom is found, a symptom diagnostic procedure can be followed to repair the vehicle.
Always use this test after vehicle repairs because the anti-lock brake control module is unable to detect some system concerns unless the vehicle is driven under specific conditions. After completing the drive cycle test, carry out the self-test using the scan tool.
NOTE: Wetting down the area where the testing is to be carried out will aid in this test.
NOTE: An assistant should be used to monitor the wheels during the ABS stop. Momentary lockup is permissible.
1. While driving the vehicle approximately 16 km/h (10 mph), press the brake pedal hard enough to lock all 4 wheels.
2. Does one wheel lock consistently?
^ If yes and the yellow ABS warning indicator is not illuminated, GO to Symptom Chart. Anti-Lock Control
^ If yes and the yellow ABS warning indicator is illuminated, retrieve and document the DTCs. Proceed to the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart. Anti-Lock Control
3. While driving the vehicle approximately 32 km/h (20 mph), perform a light-to-medium (normal traffic) stop.
4. Does the pump motor turn on and are brake pedal pulsations felt at any time during the stop?
^ If yes and the yellow ABS warning indicator is not illuminated, GO to Symptom Chart. Anti-Lock Control
^ If yes and the yellow ABS indicator is illuminated, retrieve and document DTCs. Proceed to the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart. Anti-Lock Control
5. Clear continuous DTCs.
6. Start the vehicle and shift the transmission into low gear.
7. Allow the vehicle to creep forward at idle for at least 45 seconds.
8. Does the yellow ABS indicator illuminate?
^ If yes, retrieve and document the DTCs. Proceed to the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart. Anti-Lock Control
9. Slowly accelerate to 40 km/h (25 mph). Let at least 45 seconds elapse before reaching 40 km/h (25 mph).
10. Does the yellow ABS warning indicator illuminate?
^ If yes, retrieve and document the DTCs. Proceed to the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart. Anti-Lock Control
11. Has the customer concern been addressed and corrected by the previous actions?
^ If yes, the system is OK.
^ If no, GO to Symptom Chart. Anti-Lock Control
