Brakes and Traction Control: Description and Operation

Brake System
The braking system on the E-Series vehicle consists of these components:
^ An electronic hydraulic control unit (HCU)
^ Vacuum booster power booster (E-150 to E-350)
^ A Hydro-Boost(R) power booster (E-450 only)
^ Master cylinder
^ Front brake discs
^ Rear brake discs
^ Parking brakes
^ Anti-lock brake system (ABS)

The significant features of the brake system are:
^ All vehicles are equipped with rear disc brakes.
^ All vehicles have front disc brakes.
^ The parking brake is foot-operated and, on the E-150, E-250 and E-350, uses a drum-in-hat brake system. The E-450 is equipped with a transmission-mounted parking brake.
^ The brake hydraulic system is split front and rear at the brake master cylinder.
^ The brake power assist is vacuum-operated on the E-150, E-250 and E-350. The E-450 is equipped with a Hydro-Boost(R) power brake booster powered by the power steering pump.
^ All vehicles are equipped with an ABS. E-350 extended 12/15 passenger vehicles also include traction control and stability assist.
