Starter Motor: Service and Repair

STARTER MOTOR







Removal and Installation

WARNING: When carrying out maintenance on the starting system, be aware heavy gauge leads are connected to the dual frame mounted batteries. Make sure protective caps are in place when maintenance is complete. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.

2. NOTE: The 6.0L diesel uses 2 frame mount batteries. The ground path is through the frame.

Disconnect the battery ground cable from the frame.







3. Remove the nut and position the cable bracket aside.







4. Remove the starter solenoid protective cap.







5. Disconnect the starter motor electrical connections.
6. Remove the 2 bolts, the stud bolt and the starter.

Installation
1. Position the starter motor and install the 2 bolts and the stud bolt in 3 stages.
- Stage 1: Install the 2 bolts and the stud bolt finger tight.
- Stage 2: Tighten the upper bolt to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- Stage 3: Tighten the lower bolt and stud bolt to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).







2. Connect the starter motor electrical connection.
- Tighten to 14 Nm (10 lb-ft).







3. Connect the starter motor electrical connection.
- Tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).







4. Install the starter solenoid protective cap.







5. Position the cable bracket and install the nut.
- Tighten to 22 Nm (16 lb-ft).

6. NOTE: The 6.0L diesel uses 2 frame mount batteries. The ground path is through the frame.

Connect the battery ground cable.
