Power Locks: Description and Operation
HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMSThe hood latch system contains a latch attached to the upper radiator support (header panel) and a hood latch striker attached to the hood. The latch is controlled by the hood latch release handle and cable.
The front and rear door entry system contains a latch that is attached to the inside of the door frame and is controlled by the exterior and interior door handles. The latch contains the door ajar switch and door lock actuator. The doors can be locked/unlocked by the remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitter, the keyless entry keypad, the door lock control switches or the door lock cylinder (LH front door).
The rear doors have a child safety lock feature, which is a manual override to prevent the door from being opened from the inside door handle. The child safety lock is integral to the rear door latch and is located on the inside of the rear door frame.
Liftgate
The liftgate system contains a latch located on the bottom of the inside frame of the liftgate, which is electronically controlled by the smart junction box (SJB) and (if equipped) the power liftgate module. When the SJB detects the liftgate release handle is pulled, the SJB actuates the liftgate latch. The liftgate release operates only when the doors have been unlocked electronically. The SJB will not release the liftgate if the vehicle speed is greater than 5 km/h (3 mph).
The liftgate window latch is mounted on the upper center portion of the liftgate frame and includes the ajar switch and the latch actuator. The liftgate window latch release is controlled by the SJB. When the SJB detects the release switch is pressed, a request from the RKE transmitter or the correct code from the keyless entry keypad, the SJB actuates the liftgate glass latch release. The liftgate window glass release operates only when the doors have been unlocked electronically.
Power Lock/Unlock
The power lock/unlock feature requests all of the vehicle doors locked or unlocked upon a customer request from either interior door lock switch in the vehicle. The power door locking system functions independently of ignition status or vehicle speed.
Auto-Locking
The auto-locking feature locks all doors when all doors, including the liftgate, are closed, the brake pedal was pressed with the ignition switch in the ON position, and a vehicle speed of 20 km/h (12 mph) or higher is achieved. This feature relocks the doors (if any doors are open) after the brake pedal is pressed, once all doors are read as closed, and the vehicle speed exceeds 20 km/h (12 mph). The auto-locking feature can be enabled/disabled through module configuration, the scan tool, the keyless entry keypad, the instrument panel message center (if equipped), or the ignition switch and the door lock control switch.
Smart Unlock
The smart unlock feature prevents the driver door from locking with the key in the ignition lock cylinder. When the SJB receives a LOCK command from a door lock control switch with the key in the ignition lock cylinder and the driver door open, the SJB commands the driver door to UNLOCK.
Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Transmitter
Without Power Liftgate:
With Power Liftgate:
The door locks, release latches, and interior lighting are controlled by the SJB.
The RKE transmitter initiates the following electronic system functions:
- Unlocks the driver door (single press of the unlock button)
- Unlocks all doors (second press of the unlock button within 3 seconds)
- Locks all doors
- Releases the liftgate window glass
- Activates/deactivates the panic alarm
- Issues a command to open the power liftgate (if equipped)
- Issues a command to turn on the interior lamps (when unlocking) and off (when locking), provided the defeat switch on the dimmer switch is not active
- Sounds the horn and flashes the turn signals once when LOCK is pressed twice within 3 seconds, and the doors are closed
- Sounds the horn and flashes the turn signals twice when LOCK is pressed twice within 3 seconds, and any door is open
The RKE transmitter has a minimum operating range of 10 m (33 ft).
Up to 4 RKE transmitters can be programmed.
The RKE transmitters can be programmed using a scan tool or by using the remote keyless entry transmitter programming procedure.
Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Transmitter Lock/Unlock Control - Unlock
The remote control feature provides lock/unlock functions independently of ignition status, vehicle speed, or transmission position. The remote control feature provides a 2-step process for unlocking the doors. Upon receipt of the first request for unlocking the doors, the remote control feature requests the SJB to unlock the driver door only. If another unlock request is received within 3 seconds of the first, the remote control feature requests that all doors be unlocked.
Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Transmitter Lock/Unlock Control - Lock
The remote control feature requests that all the doors be locked when the LOCK button is pressed. On any press of the lock button with all doors closed, the remote control feature requests 1 flash of the parking lamps. If any door is ajar, no flash occurs, indicating it locked all the doors but 1 or more doors are ajar. As soon as the last door is closed, 1 flash of the parking lamps occurs. If 2 presses of the lock button are received within 3 seconds, the horn chirps once, and the parking lamps flash twice to indicate that all the doors are closed and locked. If any door is ajar when the second lock request is received within 3 seconds of the first, the remote control feature requests the horn chirp twice without flashing the parking lamps to indicate it locked all the doors, but 1 or more doors are ajar. When the key is in the RUN or START position, no parking lamp flashes or horn chirp confirmations occur.
Panic Alarm
The panic alarm feature controls activation of the panic alarm, providing audible and visual alarms that are evident from the exterior of the vehicle. The panic alarm feature requests that the parking lamps and horn are flashed until deactivation. The flashing of the outputs occurs at the same time. Activation of the panic alarm is accomplished by pressing the PANIC button on a RKE transmitter whenever the key is in the OFF or ACC position. At all other times this feature is disabled. Deactivation of an active PANIC alarm is accomplished by:
- a second press of the RKE transmitter PANIC button.
- the ignition switch transitions out of the OFF or ACC position.
- a period of 2 minutes and 45 seconds has elapsed since the initial activation.
Keyless Entry Keypad
The keyless entry keypad, located on the exterior of the driver door, provides a method for the customer to access the vehicle without a key or RKE transmitter. The keyless entry keypad feature:
- Locks all doors
- Unlocks only the driver door
- Unlocks all doors
- Programs/erases the customer keypad code
- Enables/disables auto-locking
- Enables/disables auto-unlocking
- Releases the liftgate glass
The keyless entry keypad feature operates independently of ignition status, vehicle speed, or transmission position. When a keypad button is pressed, the keypad buttons illuminate to provide better visibility. If 7/8 and 9/0 are pressed or 5 seconds have elapsed since the last button press, the illumination is turned off.
Each vehicle equipped with a keyless entry keypad is programmed with a 5-digit entry code. This code is provided to the customer on a wallet card in the Owner's Literature package. In addition, this code is available through a scan tool. When entering codes, each digit must be entered within 5 seconds of the previous button press.
Anti-Scan Feature
To provide added security, the keyless entry keypad is disabled for 1 minute after pressing the button 35 times without a valid entry code being entered. The keypad flashes during this 1-minute mode with all functionality disabled except for 7/8 and 9/0 still being allowed to lock the vehicle.
Anti-Scan is turned off after any of the following events:
- One minute of keyless entry keypad inactivity has elapsed
- The RKE transmitter UNLOCK button is pressed
- The key is turned to the ON position
