Welding Precautions
WELDING PRECAUTIONS
WARNING:
- Do not use an A, B or C fire extinguisher to extinguish magnesium fires. Use only a type D fire extinguisher to extinguish magnesium fires. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
- Do not use water to extinguish magnesium fires. Water will excite a magnesium fire. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
CAUTION:
- Magnesium will burn if heated above 800°F.
- Sanding or grinding magnesium creates a highly flammable dust. Do not use the same sanding disk on steel after using it on magnesium.
NOTE:
- Aluminum spacers between the magnesium radiator support and steel components are required to prevent galvanic corrosion.
- Whenever factory E-coat has been removed by sanding, grinding or weld burn-off, the coating must be restored. Use low temperature anti-corrosion coating.
1. If welding must be done on a frame, make sure the following requirements are met:
- If the frame is attached to the vehicle, the battery ground cable must be disconnected before using any electrical welding equipment.
- Do not use gas welding equipment. Metal inert gas (MIG) and tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding are acceptable.
- Use a temperature-indicating crayon to make sure that the temperature does not exceed 750°C (1,400°F).
- Install new spot-welded components by spot welding where possible. If spot welding is not possible, use puddle welding.
