Principles of Operation

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

Power Locks
The power lock/unlock feature requests all of the vehicle doors to lock or unlock upon a request from the door lock control switch, keyless entry keypad, or remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitter. Power locking and unlocking functions independently of the key position, vehicle speed, or transmission position. The vehicle security module (VSM) activates internal relays to supply the correct powers and grounds for the door lock actuators.

Power Unlock Inhibit

NOTE: The power unlock inhibit feature is not enabled when the vehicle is delivered to the customer. If the customer requests, the module can be configured to enable this feature.

With the key out of the ignition lock cylinder, 20 seconds after electrically locked (RKE transmitter, keyless entry keypad, door lock control switch locked with door ajar) and all doors closed, the door lock control switch UNLOCK button is disabled if the power unlock inhibit feature is enabled. (The lock function still operates.)

Deactivating/Activating Power Door Unlock Switch Inhibit - Using the Power Door Lock Switches
This feature can be configured by the customer. Steps 1, 2 and 3 must be completed within 30 seconds.
1. Turn the key to ON, then press UNLOCK 3 times.
2. Turn the key to OFF, then press UNLOCK 3 times.
3. Turn the key to ON.
4. Verify that the horn chirps. This indicates the enable/disable mode is ready to receive program changes.
5. Within 5 seconds press the LOCK button twice.

One horn chirp indicates the system is disabled. One horn chirp, followed by the horn sounding, indicates the system is enabled.

Pressing the lock button twice (again) toggles the door lock control switch UNLOCK button inhibit feature state.

Turn the key OFF to exit the enable/disable programming mode.

Autolock

NOTE: The autolock feature is not available on vehicles equipped with manual transmissions.

The autolock feature locks all the doors when all the doors are closed, the brake pedal is pressed with the key in the ON position, and vehicle speed then exceeds 8 km/h (5 mph) or higher. This feature relocks the doors (if any doors were open) after the brake pedal is pressed, once all the doors are read as closed and vehicle speed then exceeds 8 km/h (5 mph). Door ajar switches are wired directly to the VSM. The autolock feature can be enabled/disabled through module configuration, the ignition switch, and the keyless entry keypad. The autolock feature also uses inputs from the key position, the brake pedal position (BPP) switch, and vehicle speed through the universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter (UART)-based protocol (UBP) network.

Smart Unlock
The smart unlock feature prevents the driver door from locking with the key in the ignition lock cylinder. When the VSM receives a LOCK command from a door lock control switch, and the key is in the ignition lock cylinder with the driver door open, the VSM commands the driver door to UNLOCK.

Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Transmitter

Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Transmitter:

The RKE transmitter can be programmed using a scan tool or by using the ignition lock cylinder method.

The RKE transmitter initiates the following electronic system functions:
- Unlocks the driver door
- Unlocks all doors
- Locks all doors
- Activates/deactivates the panic alarm
- Commands the interior lamps on (when unlocking) and off (when locking)
- Sounds the horn once when LOCK is pressed twice within 3 seconds and the doors are closed

The RKE transmitter has a normal operating range of 10 m (33 ft).

Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Transmitter Lock/Unlock Control - Unlock
The RKE transmitter feature provides lock/unlock functions independently of key position, vehicle speed, or transmission position. The RKE transmitter feature provides a 2-step process for unlocking the doors. Upon receipt of the first requests for unlocking the doors, the remote control feature requests the VSM to unlock the driver door only. If another unlock request is received within 3 seconds of the first, the RKE transmitter feature requests that all doors be unlocked.

Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Transmitter Lock/Unlock Control - Lock
The RKE transmitter feature requests that all the doors be locked when the door lock control switch LOCK button is pressed. On any press of the LOCK button with all doors closed, the RKE transmitter feature requests 1 flash of the parking lamps. If any door is ajar, no flash occurs, indicating the VSM locked all the doors but 1 or more doors are ajar. As soon as the last door is closed, the vehicle provides 1 flash of the parking lamps. If 2 presses of the LOCK button are received within 3 seconds the horn chirps once, and the parking lamps flash twice to indicate that all the doors are closed and locked. If any door is ajar when the second lock request is received within 3 seconds of the first, the RKE transmitter feature requests the horn chirp twice without flashing the parking lamps to indicate it locked all the doors but 1 or more doors are ajar. When the key is in the ON or START position, no parking lamp flashes or horn chirp confirmations occur.

Panic Alarm
The panic alarm feature provides audible and visual alarms which are evident from the exterior of the vehicle. The panic alarm feature requests that the parking lamps are flashed and the horn sounds until deactivation. The flashing of the outputs occurs simultaneously. Activation of the panic alarm is accomplished by pressing the PANIC button on an RKE transmitter whenever the key is in the OFF or ACC positions. At all other times this feature is disabled. Deactivation of an active PANIC alarm is accomplished by: 1) a second press of the RKE transmitter PANIC button, 2) the key is switched out of the OFF or ACC position, or 3) a period of 2 minutes and 45 seconds has elapsed since the initial activation.

Keyless Entry Keypad
The keyless entry keypad, located in the exterior handle of the driver door, provides a method for the customer to access the vehicle without a key or RKE transmitter. The keyless entry keypad feature:
- locks all doors and inhibits the door lock control switch unlock capability after 20 seconds (if the inhibit feature is enabled).
- unlocks only the driver door.
- unlocks all doors.
- programs/erases the customer key code.
- enables/disables autolocking.

The keyless entry keypad feature operates independently of key position status, vehicle speed, or transmission position. When a keyless entry keypad button is pressed, the keyless entry keypad buttons illuminate to provide better visibility. If LOCK ALL DOORS is entered or 5 seconds have elapsed since the last button press, the illumination is turned off.

Each vehicle equipped with a keyless entry keypad is programmed with a permanent factory 5-digit keyless entry keypad code. This code is provided to the customer through a wallet card in the Owner's Literature package. In addition, this code is available through a scan tool and is also printed on the VSM label. When entering customer or permanent codes, each digit must be entered within 5 seconds of the previous button press.

Anti-Scan Feature
To provide added security, the keyless entry keypad is disabled for 1 minute after 35 button presses without a valid entry code being entered. The keyless entry keypad flashes during this 1-minute mode with all functionality disabled except for 7/8 and 9/0 still being allowed to lock the vehicle.

Anti-Scan is turned off after 1 minute of keyless entry keypad inactivity.

Unlocking the Doors with the Keyless Entry Keypad System
To unlock the driver door, enter either the permanent factory code or the customer (personal) code (each digit must be pressed within 5 seconds of the prior digit). The interior lamps will illuminate.

To unlock all doors, enter either the permanent factory code or the customer (personal) code (driver door unlocks) and press the 3/4 control within 5 seconds.

Locking the Doors with the Keyless Entry Keypad System
It is not necessary to enter the permanent factory or customer (personal) code prior to locking all doors. To lock all doors, press the 7/8 and 9/0 controls at the same time.
