Removal

Transmission - Gasoline Engines

Special Tool(s):





Removal

All vehicles
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
2. Disconnect the battery. For additional information, refer to Battery.
3. Remove the exhaust pipe between the exhaust manifolds and the exhaust flange. For additional information, refer to Exhaust System.

Four wheel drive (4WD) vehicles
4. Remove the transfer case assembly.

Rear wheel drive (RWD) vehicles
5. Remove the driveshaft.

All vehicles
6. If transmission disassembly is required, drain the transmission fluid. Remove the transmission fluid pan drain plug and allow the fluid to drain.





7. Install the transmission fluid pan drain plug.
^ Tighten to 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).





8. Install a suitable high-lift transmission jack.

4WD vehicles
9. Remove the jack stand from under the extension housing after installing the transmission jack.

RWD vehicles
10. Remove the wire harness from the rear crossmember.





11. Remove the rear transmission mount nuts. All vehicles





12. Remove the selector lever cable.
1 Disconnect the selector lever cable from the manual lever.
2 Remove the bolts and position the selector lever cable and bracket aside.





13. Loosen the bolt and disconnect the solenoid body electrical connector.





14. Disconnect the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor electrical connector.





15. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) and intermediate shaft combination speed sensor electrical connector.





16. NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

Disconnect the RH and LH wire harness from the side of the transmission.





RWD vehicles
17. Remove the nut and disconnect the fuel line bracket.





18. Remove the LH crossmember bolts and nuts.
1 Loosen, but do not remove, the bolt and nut indicated.





19. Remove the RH crossmember bracket bolts and nuts.
1 Remove the bracket bolts and nuts.
2 Remove the bracket.





20. Remove the RH crossmember bolts and nuts.





21. Remove the LH crossmember bolt, nut and the crossmember.
1 Remove the bolt and nut.
2 Remove the crossmember.





22. Remove the rear transmission mount from the extension housing.





23. If equipped with dual generators, rotate the tensioner and remove the outer accessory drive belt from the crankshaft pulley.





All vehicles
24. Remove the flexplate inspection cover.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Remove the inspection plate.





25. Remove the cylinder block opening cover in order to gain access to the torque converter nuts.





26. Remove the starter motor. For additional information, refer to Starting System.

27. NOTE: Using a suitable strap wrench, rotate the crankshaft pulley to gain access to the torque converter nuts.

Remove and discard the 6 torque converter nuts.





28. While holding the case fitting, disconnect the rear fluid cooler tube nut and tube.





29. While holding the case fitting, disconnect the front fluid cooler tube nut and tube.





30. Remove the 9 transmission-to-engine mounting bolts.





31. Slide the transmission back enough to install the special tool.





32. Carefully lower the transmission assembly. If the transmission is being overhauled or if installing a new or remanufactured transmission, carry out the transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning procedure.
33. For vehicles equipped with a power take-off (PTO) assembly, prior to installing the transmission, the PTO assembly must be flushed and cleaned to remove any foreign material. Failure to remove foreign material from the PTO assembly may result in subsequent transmission concerns.
