Torqshift - Automatic Transaxle/Transmission

Transmission - Gasoline Engines





Removal
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Disconnect the battery.
3. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.
4. Remove the driveshaft.
5. If transmission disassembly is required, drain the transmission fluid. Remove the transmission fluid drain plug and allow the transmission fluid to drain.





6. Install the transmission fluid drain plug.
^ Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).





7. Install a suitable high-lift transmission jack.
8. If equipped, remove the 2 wire harness retainers from the rear crossmember and position the wire harness aside.





9. Remove the banjo fitting and transmission fluid cooler inlet tube.





10. Remove the banjo fitting and transmission fluid cooler outlet tube.





11. If equipped, remove the transmission fluid cooler tubes from the bracket.





12. If equipped, remove the selector lever cable from the routing clip.





13. Remove the selector lever cable and bracket from the transmission.
1) Disconnect the selector lever cable from the manual control lever.
2) Disconnect the wire harness from the selector lever cable bracket.
3) Remove the bolts and position the selector lever cable and bracket aside.





14. Remove the heat shield screws from the crossmember.





15. Remove the center heat shield screws.





16. Remove the center heat shield screw.





17. Remove the forward RH heat shield screw.





18. Remove the forward RH heat shield screws from the frame.





19. Loosen the bolt and disconnect the solenoid body electrical connector.





20. Disconnect the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor electrical connector.





21. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) and intermediate shaft combination speed sensor electrical connector.





22. Disconnect and position the wire harness aside.





23. Disconnect the wire harness from the bracket.





24. Remove the cylinder block opening cover in order to gain access to the torque converter nuts.





25. Use the special tool to rotate the crankshaft in order to gain access to the flexplate nuts.





26. Remove and discard the 6 torque converter nuts.





27. Remove the starter motor.
28. Remove the screws and torque converter cover.





29. Remove the LH crossmember nuts.





30. Remove the LH crossmember bracket.





31. Remove the RH crossmember nuts.





32. Remove the RH crossmember bracket.





33. Remove the transmission insulator and retainer nuts and remove the crossmember.





34. Remove the bolts and the transmission insulator and retainer from the extension housing.





35. Remove the 9 transmission-to-engine mounting bolts and position the bracketry aside.





36. Slide the transmission back enough to install the special tool.





37. If overhauling the transmission or installing a new transmission, carry out the transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning.
