Pinpoint Test AI: The Traction Assist Message Center Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the traction control status message from the ABS module (Roll Stability Control (RSC(R))) or the PCM (traction control) through the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. When the vehicle traction control or RSC(R) system is in active mode or is being controlled by the ABS module (RSC(R)) or the PCM (traction control), the IPC flashes the traction assist message center indicator. When the ABS module (RSC(R)) or the PCM (traction control) detects a concern, the IPC turns on the traction assist message center indicator.
If the traction control status message is missing for less than 5 seconds, the IPC defaults the traction control message center indicator to the last on/off state, based upon the last known good traction control status message received.
If the traction control status message is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IPC sets DTC U0100:00 (traction control) or U0121:00 (RSC(R)) in continuous memory and defaults the traction control message center indicator on.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Traction control concern
- IPC
PINPOINT TEST AI: THE TRACTION ASSIST MESSAGE CENTER INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
-------------------------------------------------
AI1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded DTCs from the IPC self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC U0100:00, Go To Pinpoint Test AT. Pinpoint Tests AT: DTC U0100:00
For DTC U0121:00, Go To Pinpoint Test AV. Pinpoint Tests AV: DTC U0121:00
For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes
No
If equipped with traction control, GO to AI2.
If equipped with roll stability assist, GO to AI3.
-------------------------------------------------
AI2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded DTCs from the PCM Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information.
No
GO to AI4.
-------------------------------------------------
AI3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE ABS MODULE SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded DTCs from the ABS module self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems. Testing and Inspection
No
GO to AI4.
-------------------------------------------------
AI4 VERIFY THE OPERATION OF THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) AND ENGINE OVER-TEMPERATURE MESSAGE CENTER INDICATORS
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: PCM C175b (Gasoline).
- Disconnect: Transmission C1385 (Diesel).
- Ignition ON.
- NOTE: If multiple warnings are present, the message center indicators rotate through each of the warnings. Allow the displays to rotate through each display while determining whether the powertrain malfunction (wrench) and over-temperature message center indicators are active.
- Observe the message center or integrated display area of the IC with the PCM connected and disconnected.
- Does the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator remain off when the PCM is connected and become active with the PCM disconnected?
Yes
The system is operating normally at this time. If the traction control system encountered system concerns, the ABS module sets DTCs and sends a command to the IPC to illuminate the traction control message center indicator.
No
INSTALL a new IPC. REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). TEST the system for normal operation.
