AUDIBLE UNDERHOOD CLICK NOISE AND/OR HARD START AFTER REFUELING WITH DTCS P0171, P0174, P0316, P144A, AND/OR P1450

This article supersedes TSB 11-10-03 to update the Title, Vehicle Listing, Diagnostic Trouble Codes Issue Statement, and Build Dates.

ISSUE
Some 2009-2011 E-Series, Expedition, and Navigator built on or before 4/15/2011 plus 2009-2010 F150 and 2011 F250/350 built on or before 11/1/2010 may exhibit an audible clicking noise in the engine compartment and/or hard start after refueling with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0144A, P0171, P0174, P0316, and/or P1450.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Does the vehicle exhibit an audible click noise in the engine compartment?

a. Yes - Proceed to Step 2.

b. No - Proceed to Step 3.

2. Unplug the electrical connector from the under hood evaporative emissions purge valve. Does the noise go away?

a. Yes - Proceed to Step 4.

b. No - Do not continue with this article, refer to Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis manual (PC/ED).

3. Is the vehicle experiencing a hard start after refueling with DTCs P0316, P0171, P0174, P144A and/or P1450?

a. Yes - Proceed to Step 4.

b. No - Do not continue with this article, refer to PC/ED manual.

4. Replace the evaporative emissions purge valve located in the engine compartment, refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-13.
