Engine Rear Cover













Removal

1. Remove the starter. For additional information, refer to Starting System.

2. Remove crankshaft rear seal. For additional information, refer to Crankshaft Rear Seal Service and Repair.

3. Remove the 3 bolts and the turbocharger heat shield.





4. NOTICE: To prevent engine damage, replace damaged or missing dowel pins before installing the engine rear cover.

Remove the 8 bolts from the engine rear cover.

5. NOTE: Use care when removing the engine rear cover so that the oil pump cover gasket is not pulled out during removal.

Using a thin-blade scraper, cut the sealant at the oil pump cover joint.





6. NOTICE: Sealant is used where the crankcase and the lower crankcase meet. Failure to cut the sealant can result in pulling the lower crankcase seal out while removing the rear cover.

NOTE: A 139.7 mm (5.50 in) long thin-blade scraper is needed to correctly cut the sealant.

Using a thin-blade scraper, cut the sealant where the crankcase and the lower crankcase meet.





7. NOTICE: Sealant is used where the crankcase and the lower crankcase meet. Failure to cut the sealant can result in pulling the lower crankcase seal out while removing the rear cover.

NOTE: A 139.7 mm (5.50 in) long thin-blade scraper is needed to properly cut the sealant.

Using a thin-blade scraper, cut the sealant where the crankcase and the lower crankcase meet. Remove the rear cover.

- Remove and discard the press-in-place gasket.

- Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces.





Installation

1. Apply a bead of sealant at the back seam of the upper and lower crankcase.





2. Apply a bead of sealant at the oil pump cover joint.





3. NOTICE: To prevent engine damage, replace damaged or missing dowel pins before installing the engine rear cover.

NOTE: Prior to installing the engine rear cover, check that the alignment dowels are centered so that 10 mm (0.39 in) of the dowel extends toward the engine and 10 mm (0.39 in) extends toward the transmission.

Install the engine rear cover.

- Install the new press-in-place gasket.

- Install the engine rear cover.

- Install the 8 bolts.
- Tighten to 24 Nm (18 lb-ft).

4. Position the turbocharger heat shield and install the 3 bolts.

1. Tighten to 49 Nm (36 lb-ft).

2. Tighten to 11 Nm (97 lb-in).





5. Install the crankshaft rear seal. For additional information, refer to Crankshaft Rear Seal Service and Repair.

6. Install the starter. For additional information, refer to Starting System.
