Pinpoint Test
Pinpoint Test R: The Charging System Warning Indicator Flickers or is Intermittent
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 12, Charging System for schematic and connector information Diagrams By Number.
Normal Operation
Under normal operation, the charging system warning indicator is on with the key in the ON position and the engine off, and is off with the key in the ON position and the engine running.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Upper generator disconnected
- Lower generator disconnected
- I circuit upper or lower open
- Charging system warning indicator circuit open
- Upper generator
- Lower generator
- Instrument Cluster (IC)
- PCM
PINPOINT TEST R: THE CHARGING SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR FLICKERS OR IS INTERMITTENT
-------------------------------------------------
R1 CHECK THE DTCs IN THE PCM
- Ignition OFF.
- Connect the scan tool.
- Ignition ON.
- With the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO), check the PCM for DTCs with the scan tool.
- Are generator DTCs present?
Yes
GO to the appropriate pinpoint test listed in the Symptom Chart.
No
GO to R2.
-------------------------------------------------
R2 CHECK THE BATTERY VOLTAGE
- Start the engine.
- With the Key ON Engine Running (KOER), and all of the accessories turned off, measure the voltage at the battery(s) while varying the engine rpm.
- Is the voltage greater than 15.5 volts?
Yes
GO to Pinpoint Test S. Pinpoint Test S: The Charging System Overcharges (Battery Voltage Is Greater Than 15.5 Volts)
No
GO to R3.
-------------------------------------------------
R3 CHECK THE CHARGING SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Active Commands.
- Ignition ON.
- With the KOEO, enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Active Commands. Command the charging system warning indicator on.
- Does the charging system warning indicator illuminate?
Yes
GO to R4.
No
REFER to Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.
-------------------------------------------------
R4 CHECK THE PCM OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect the scan tool.
- Ignition ON.
- With the KOEO, monitor the charging system warning indicator.
- Is the charging system warning indicator illuminated?
Yes
The PCM is operating correctly. RECHECK the generator circuits (including the generators) for intermittent shorts or opens. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
GO to R5.
-------------------------------------------------
R5 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION
- Disconnect all of the PCM connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion.
- pushed-out pins.
- Connect all of the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to Computers and Control Systems. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.
