Removal




Transmission - Diesel Engines





Removal

All vehicles

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Vehicle Jacking and Lifting.

2. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.

3. Disconnect the battery. For additional information, refer to Battery.

Vehicles equipped with a one-piece driveshaft

4. Remove the driveshaft. For additional information, refer to Drive/Propeller Shafts, Bearings and Joints.

Vehicles equipped with a two-piece driveshaft

5. Index-mark the driveshaft flange and the driveshaft. Remove the 4 bolts.

6. Position aside the driveshaft and support with mechanic's wire.

All vehicles

7. If transmission disassembly is required, drain the transmission fluid. Remove the transmission fluid drain plug and allow the transmission fluid to drain.





8. Install the transmission fluid drain plug.
- Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).





9. Install a suitable high-lift transmission jack.

10. Remove the transmission fluid cooler tube inlet fitting.





11. Remove the transmission fluid cooler tube outlet fitting.





12. Remove the transmission fluid cooler tubes from the bracket.





13. If equipped, remove the selector lever cable from the routing clip.





14. Remove the selector lever cable and selector lever cable bracket from the transmission.

1. Disconnect the selector lever cable from the manual control lever.

2. Disconnect the wire harness from the selector lever cable bracket.

3. Remove the bolts and position the selector lever cable and bracket aside.





15. Loosen the bolt and disconnect the transmission vehicle harness connector.





16. Disconnect the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor electrical connector.





17. Disconnect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) and intermediate shaft speed sensor electrical connector.





18. Disconnect and position the wire harness aside.





19. Disconnect the wire harness from the bracket.





20. Remove the cylinder block opening cover in order to gain access to the torque converter nuts.





21. If equipped with dual generators, rotate the tensioner and remove the outer accessory drive belt from the crankshaft pulley.





22. Use the Strap Wrench to rotate the crankshaft in order to gain access to the torque converter to flexplate nuts.





23. Remove and discard the 6 torque converter to flexplate nuts.





24. Remove the transmission support crossmember.

25. Remove the bolts and the transmission insulator and retainer from the extension housing.





26. Remove the 9 transmission-to-engine mounting bolts and position the bracket aside.





27. Slide the transmission back and install the Torque Converter Retainer.





28. Remove and discard the transmission filler tube O-ring.





29. If the transmission is being disassembled to install new parts, or if a new or remanufactured transmission is being installed, the transmission fluid cooler, the auxiliary transmission fluid cooler (if equipped) and the transmission fluid cooler tubes must be cleaned and backflushed to keep contaminants from entering the transmission.
