Pinpoint Test I: The Keyless Entry Keypad Illumination Is Inoperative/Does Not Operate Correctly

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 117 (Escape/Mariner, Escape Hybrid/Mariner Hybrid), Remote Keyless Entry and Alarm for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number

Normal Operation

When any keypad button is touched the Smart Junction Box (SJB) sends voltage to the keyless entry keypad LEDs on the illumination output circuit to assist the driver in entering an access code at night.

- DTC B1624 (Lamp Keypad Output Open Circuit) - an on-demand DTC that sets when the SJB detects the keyless entry keypad illumination output circuit is open or shorted to voltage.
- DTC B1626 (Lamp Keypad Output Short Circuit To Ground) - an on-demand DTC that sets when the SJB detects the keyless entry keypad illumination output circuit is shorted to ground.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Keyless entry keypad
- SJB

PINPOINT TEST I: THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD ILLUMINATION IS INOPERATIVE/DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

NOTE: Failure to disconnect the battery when instructed will result in false resistance readings. Refer to Battery.

-------------------------------------------------
I1 CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD OPERATION

- Press the 7/8 and 9/0 on the keyless entry keypad.
- Do all the doors lock?

Yes
GO to I2.

No
GO to Pinpoint Test H. Pinpoint Test H: The Doors Do Not Lock/Unlock Using The Keyless Entry Keypad

-------------------------------------------------
I2 CHECK THE RECORDED SJB DTCs FROM THE SELF-TEST

- Check the recorded results from the SJB self-test.
- Is DTC B1624 or DTC B1626 present?

Yes
For DTC B1624, GO to I3.

For DTC B1626, GO to I9.

No
GO to I11.

-------------------------------------------------
I3 CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD ILLUMINATION

- Ignition OFF.
- Check the keyless entry keypad illumination.
- Is the keyless entry keypad illumination always on?

Yes
GO to I8.

No
GO to I4.

-------------------------------------------------
I4 CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD ILLUMINATION OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR REFERENCE VOLTAGE

NOTE: The SJB sends out a constant reference voltage on circuit CPK28 (WH/GN) for its own circuit diagnostics. This voltage is 10 volts +/- 1 volt.

- Disconnect: Keyless Entry Keypad C500 .
- Measure the voltage between the keyless entry keypad C500-2, circuit CPK28 (WH/GN), harness side and ground.

- Are 10 volts (+/- 1 volt) present?

Yes
GO to I6.

No
GO to I5.

-------------------------------------------------
I5 CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD ILLUMINATION OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

- Disconnect: SJB C2280c .
- Measure the resistance between the keyless entry keypad C500-2, circuit CPK28 (WH/GN), harness side and the SJB C2280c-11, circuit CPK28 (WH/GN), harness side.

- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to I11.

No
REPAIR circuit CPK28 (WH/GN) for an open. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

-------------------------------------------------
I6 CHECK FOR SJB OUTPUT

- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: SJB DataLogger .
- Measure the voltage between the keyless entry keypad C500-2, circuit CPK28 (WH/GN), harness side and ground while active commanding the SJB PID (KY_PAD_LMP) ON.

- Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?

Yes
GO to I7.

No
GO to I11.

-------------------------------------------------
I7 CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD ILLUMINATION GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

- Disconnect: Negative Battery Cable .
- Measure the resistance between the keyless entry keypad C500-5, circuit GD182 (BK/GY), harness side and ground.

- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
INSTALL a new keyless entry keypad. REFER to Keyless Entry Keypad Service and Repair. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

No
REPAIR circuit GD182 (BK/GY) for an open. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

-------------------------------------------------
I8 CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD ILLUMINATION OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

- Disconnect: SJB C2280c .
- Ignition ON.
- Observe the keypad illumination.
- Is the keypad still illuminated?

Yes
REPAIR circuit CPK28 (WH/GN) for a short to voltage. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

No
GO to I11.

-------------------------------------------------
I9 CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

- Disconnect: Keyless Entry Keypad C500 .

- NOTE: DTC B1624 may set, and if set, should be ignored when carrying out this step.

- Clear the DTCs, then repeat the SJB self-test.
- Is DTC B1626 recorded?

Yes
GO to I10.

No
INSTALL a new keyless entry keypad. REFER to Keyless Entry Keypad Service and Repair. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
I10 CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD ILLUMINATION INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: SJB C2280c .
- Measure the resistance between the keyless entry keypad C500-2, circuit CPK28 (WH/GN), harness side and ground.

- Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

Yes
GO to I11.

No
REPAIR circuit CPK28 (WH/GN) for a short to ground. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

-------------------------------------------------
I11 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION

- Disconnect all the SJB connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
