Accessories and Optional Equipment: Description and Operation




Information and Entertainment System

Functional Components

The functional components of the audio system (and their locations) are as follows:

- Audio Control Module (ACM)
- Satellite Digital Audio Receiver System (SDARS) module, located behind the glove compartment (if equipped)
- Rear Entertainment Module (RETM) (if equipped)
- Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM), located under the floor console (if equipped)
- Global Positioning System Module (GPSM), located in the instrument panel (if equipped)
- Audio input jack, located in the center console
- Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable and port, located in the center console
- Microphone, integral to the auto-dimming interior mirror (if equipped)
- Clockspring
- Steering wheel controls (if equipped)
- Door speaker (one in each door)
- Subwoofer, located behind the rear seat (Explorer Sport Trac) or behind the RH rear quarter trim panel (Explorer, Mountaineer) (if equipped)
- AM/FM antenna
- AM/FM antenna cable
- Satellite radio antenna or combination satellite radio/Global Positioning System (GPS) antenna (if equipped)
- Satellite radio antenna cables (if equipped)

Audio Line-Up

The following audio systems are available:

- Base
- AM/FM single CD ACM
- Four speakers

- Premium
- AM/FM 6-CD changer ACM (standard)
- Navigation ACM (optional)
- Four speakers plus subwoofer

All audio systems include the following features:

- Speed sensitive volume
- Accessory delay
- MP3 capability
- Audio input jack

The following options are available:

- Satellite radio
- SYNC system
- Family entertainment system

Satellite Radio

The satellite radio system is comprised of the following:

- SDARS module (vehicles without navigation)
- ACM (vehicles with navigation)
- Satellite radio antenna cable
- Satellite radio antenna

For vehicles with navigation, the satellite radio receiver is built-in to the ACM.

Navigation System

The navigation system consists of the following:

- Navigation ACM
- GPS antenna (integral to the satellite radio antenna)
- Satellite radio/GPS splitter cable (part of the front satellite radio antenna cable)
- Microphone

The ACM controls the operation of the navigation system and the audio system. The system uses a GPS antenna, a vehicle speed input, and other sensor information to accurately establish the vehicle position.

Family Entertainment System

The family entertainment system consists of the following:

- Rear Entertainment Module (RETM)
- A/V ports for connecting a gaming system
- 2 wireless headphones
- A wireless remote control

SYNC System

The SYNC system consists of the following:

- Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM)
- SYNC-specific steering wheel controls
- Microphone
- Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable and port
- Audio input jack
- GPSM (vehicles without navigation)

SYNC is a hands-free communications and entertainment system that allows the following interactions:

- Send and receive phone calls via a Bluetooth-enabled phone
- Send and receive text messages via a Bluetooth-enabled phone
- Connect media devices (such as an iPod(R) or USB flash device) in order to play audio files
- Play media files via a Bluetooth-enabled audio device
- Produce vehicle health reports
- Initiate an emergency call (eCall) when the air bags deploy
- Provides hands-free access to traffic reports, turn-by-turn directions, business listings, news, sports and weather (subscription required)

Not all features are available with every phone.

The GPSM works with the SYNC system to provide vehicle location on vehicles equipped with navigation, as the vehicle location must be known for traffic, directions and information features to operate correctly.
