ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT TENSIONER

The article supersedes TSB 11-2-7 to update the Issue Statement and Service Procedure.

ISSUE
Some 2010-2011 Ranger, 2010 Explorer, Explorer Sport Trac and Mountaineer vehicles equipped with a 4.0L engine, may exhibit a rattle or ticking noise from the accessory drive belt tensioner. The rattle or ticking noise is most evident immediately after a cold start, but can also be noticed at normal operating temperatures.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Using a stethoscope, listen for a rattle or ticking noise from the accessory drive belt tensioner while the engine is idling.

a. If the noise is present in the tensioner, proceed to step 2.

b. If the noise is not present in the accessory drive belt tensioner, do not continue this article. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-05 for normal diagnostics.

2. Replace the accessory drive belt tensioner. Refer to WSM, Section 303-05.
