Pinpoint Test AB: The Charging System Message Center Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

Normal Operation

The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the charging system signal from the PCM over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. If the charging system is functioning correctly once the engine is started, the PCM send the IPC a message to turn off the charging system indicator. When a charging system concern is detected, the PCM sends a message the IC to turn on the charging system message center warning indicator.

If the charging system message is missing for less than 5 seconds, the IC defaults the charging system warning indicator to the last on/off state, based upon the last known good charging system status message received.

If the charging system message is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0100 in continuous memory and defaults the charging system warning indicator ON.

NOTE: If DTC U0100 is set in the IC, other observable symptoms may be an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or odometer.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Charging system concern
- PCM
- Message center concern



PINPOINT TEST AB: THE CHARGING SYSTEM MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

AB1 CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR FUNCTION


- Close all doors and hood.
- Ignition ON.
- Open the driver door while monitoring the door ajar message center displays.
- Does the door ajar message center warning indicator display?

Yes
GO to AB2.

No
GO to Pinpoint Test AF. Pinpoint Tests AF: The Message Center Is Not Operating Correctly

AB2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO SELF-TEST


- Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
- Are any charging system DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Charging System.

No
GO to AB3.

AB3 CHECK THE CHARGING SYSTEM OPERATION


- Check the charging system operation. Refer to Charging System.
- Does the charging system operate correctly?

Yes
GO to AB4.

No
REFER to Charging System.

AB4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC SELF-TEST


- Check for recorded IC DTCs from the self-test.
- Is DTC U0100 recorded?

Yes
GO to Pinpoint Test AP. Pinpoint Tests AP: DTC U0100

No
INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to Computers and Control Systems. TEST the system for normal operation.
