Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Deactivation and Reactivation
Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Deactivation and Reactivation
Deactivation
WARNING: Always wear eye protection when servicing a vehicle. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
WARNING: Always carry or place a live air bag module with the air bag and deployment door/trim cover/tear seam pointed away from the body. Do not set a live air bag module down with the deployment door/trim cover/tear seam face down. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING: Never probe the electrical connectors on air bag, Safety Canopy(R) or side air curtain modules. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these modules, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.
WARNING: Never disassemble or tamper with safety belt buckle/retractor pretensioners or adaptive load limiting retractors or probe the electrical connectors. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of the safety belt pretensioners or adaptive load limiting retractors which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of accidental deployment, do not use any memory saver devices. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death.
NOTE: The air bag warning indicator illuminates when the correct Restraints Control Module (RCM) fuse is removed and the ignition is ON.
NOTE: The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
NOTE: This procedure is not required for vehicles with driver/passenger air bag delete option.
1. Turn all vehicle accessories OFF.
2. Turn the ignition OFF.
3. At the Smart Junction Box (SJB), located in the RH lower kick panel, remove the cover and the RCM fuse 32 (10A) from the SJB. For additional information, refer to the Wiring Diagrams. Diagrams By Number
4. Turn the ignition ON and visually monitor the air bag warning indicator for at least 30 seconds. The air bag warning indicator will remain lit continuously (no flashing) if the correct RCM fuse has been removed. If the air bag warning indicator does not remain lit continuously, remove the correct RCM fuse before proceeding.
5. Turn the ignition OFF.
6. WARNING: Always deplete the backup power supply before repairing or installing any new front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) component and before servicing, removing, installing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side impact sensors or the restraints control module (RCM). Nearby components include doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.
Refer to the Description and Operation portion of Restraint Systems for location of the RCM and impact sensor(s).
To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least 1 minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).
Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.
Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to Battery.
7. Position the road wheels in the straight-ahead position.
8. If equipped, center the tilt steering column.
9. NOTICE: Turn the steering wheel so that the top is at 90 degrees (at the 9 o'clock position) to the left from the straight-ahead position to access the driver air bag module wire clips and to prevent damage to the steering column multifunction switch. Failure to follow this instruction may result in component damage.
Turn the steering wheel so the top of the wheel is 90 degrees to the left (at the 9 o'clock position).
10. If equipped, remove the screw and steering column manual tilt lever.
11. Remove the 3 screws and steering column lower shroud.
12. Remove the steering column upper shroud.
13. NOTE: Use a mirror to view the rear of the steering wheel to locate the 3 driver air bag module wire clips.
Using a screwdriver or suitable tool, release the wire clips from the steering wheel hooks.
- Access the 3 driver air bag module wire clips through the back of the steering wheel cover and push each wire clip toward the center of the steering wheel to release.
14. Disconnect the driver air bag module and horn switch electrical connectors and remove the driver air bag module from the steering wheel.
15. Turn the steering wheel so the road wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
16. Open and lower the glove compartment door.
17. Remove and discard the 4 passenger air bag trim cover screws.
18. NOTICE: Do not handle the passenger air bag module by grabbing the edges of the air bag trim cover. Failure to follow this instruction may result in component damage and/or system failure.
Remove and discard the 4 nuts and position out the passenger air bag module from the instrument panel.
- To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
19. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the passenger air bag module.
20. Install the RCM fuse 32 (10A) to the SJB.
21. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery.
Reactivation
1. Remove the RCM fuse 32 (10A) from the SJB.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.
3. NOTICE: Match the electrical connector key to the keyway in the passenger air bag module. The passenger air bag module electrical connector is unique and cannot be reversed when connected to the passenger air bag module. Do not force the electrical connector into the passenger air bag module. Failure to follow these instructions may result in component damage and/or system failure.
Connect the electrical connector to the passenger air bag module.
4. NOTICE: Do not handle the passenger air bag module by grabbing the edges of the air bag trim cover. Failure to follow this instruction may result in component damage and/or system failure.
NOTE: During installation, 4 new air bag module bolts must be installed.
NOTE: Check the positioning of the passenger air bag module J-nuts before positioning the passenger air bag module to the instrument panel.
Position the passenger air bag module in the instrument panel and install 4 new J-nuts.
- Tighten the bolts to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
5. NOTE: During installation, 4 new air bag module deployment door screws must be installed.
Install the 4 new passenger air bag module deployment door screws.
6. Connect the horn switch and driver air bag module electrical connectors.
7. Position the driver air bag module to the steering wheel, lining up the locator pins.
8. Firmly press the driver air bag module to engage the 3 driver air bag module wire clips to the steering wheel.
9. Install the steering column lower shroud.
10. Install the steering column upper shroud.
11. Install the 3 steering column lower shroud screws.
12. If equipped, install the steering column manual tilt lever and screw.
- Tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
13. Turn the ignition from OFF to ON.
14. Install the RCM fuse 32 (10A) to the SJB and install the cover.
15. WARNING: Make sure no one is in the vehicle and there is nothing blocking or placed in front of any air bag module when the battery is connected. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
Connect the battery ground cable.
16. Prove out the SRS as follows:
Turn the ignition from ON to OFF. Wait 10 seconds, then turn it back to ON and visually monitor the air bag warning indicator with the air bag modules installed. The air bag warning indicator will light continuously for approximately 6 seconds and then turn off. If an air bag SRS fault is present, the air bag warning indicator will either:
- fail to light.
- remain lit continuously.
- flash.
The air bag warning indicator may not illuminate until approximately 30 seconds after the ignition has been turned from the OFF to the ON position. This is the time required for the RCM to complete the testing of the SRS. If the air bag warning indicator is inoperative and a SRS fault exists, a chime will sound in a pattern of 5 sets of 5 beeps. If this occurs, the air bag warning indicator will need to be repaired before diagnosis can continue.
Clear all Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes (CMDTCs) from the RCM using a scan tool.
