Engine
Removal
All vehicles
1. Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to Fuel Delivery and Air Induction.
2. Remove the engine cooling module. For additional information, refer to Cooling System &/or Engine Block Heater.
3. Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to Intake Manifold Removal and Replacement.
4. Remove the degas bottle. For additional information, refer to Cooling System &/or Engine Block Heater.
5. Remove the PCM. For additional information, refer to Computers and Control Systems.
6. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector located below the PCM.
7. Remove the accessory drive belt from the engine.
8. Disconnect the degas bottle coolant outlet hose and the lower radiator hose.
9. Disconnect the generator wiring harness position retainers from the engine front cover studs.
10. Remove the 2 nuts and disconnect the 2 A/C compressor manifold tube assemblies from the A/C compressor.
- Discard the O-rings seals.
11. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector and position the generator wiring harness aside.
12. Remove the bolt and the transmission fluid level indicator tube.
Manual transmission equipped vehicles
13. Remove the clutch and pressure plate. For additional information, refer to Clutch, M/T.
Automatic transmission equipped vehicles
14. Remove the 2 bolts and the flexplate inspection cover.
All automatic transmission equipped vehicles
15. Remove the starter. For additional information, refer to Starting System.
16. Remove the cylinder block opening cover.
17. Remove the 4 torque converter-to-flexplate nuts.
- Discard the nuts.
18. Install the Torque Converter Retainer.
19. Loosen the 2 transmission rear mount nuts.
20. NOTE: The upper 2 transmission-to-engine bolts will be removed later.
Remove the 5 transmission-to-engine bolts.
21. NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.
Remove the 4 exhaust manifold-to-downpipe nuts.
All vehicles
22. If equipped, disconnect the block heater electrical connector.
23. Remove the bolt and the transmission wiring harness support bracket.
24. Remove the nut and the 2 engine wiring harness ground straps.
25. Remove the bolt and position the ground strap aside.
26. Remove the 3 bolts and position the power steering pump aside.
27. Remove the nut, the transmission auxiliary fluid cooler tube support bracket and the starter wiring harness support bracket from the engine front cover stud bolt.
28. Remove the 3 bolts and the A/C compressor.
29. Disconnect the RH Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) wiring harness retainers.
30. Disconnect the 2 HO2S electrical connectors.
31. Disconnect the heater coolant hose from the heater coolant tube.
32. Remove and discard the engine oil filter.
33. Disconnect the oil cooler coolant hoses.
34. NOTICE: If metal foreign material is present in the oil cooler, mechanical concerns exist. To diagnose mechanical concerns, refer to Engine. If the mechanical concern is not diagnosed and repaired, engine failure may occur.
Remove the threaded insert and the oil cooler. Inspect the engine oil cooler.
35. Remove and discard the LH engine support insulator through bolt.
36. Remove and discard the RH engine support insulator through bolt.
All automatic transmission vehicles
37. Remove the upper 2 transmission-to-engine bolts.
All vehicles
38. Install the Engine Lifting Bracket and support the engine with a suitable floor crane.
All automatic transmission vehicles
39. Support the transmission with a jack.
All vehicles
40. Using a suitable floor crane, remove the engine assembly from the vehicle.
