Pinpoint Test E: The Speedometer Is Inoperative
Normal Operation
The PCM calculates the vehicle speed from the transmission Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor input and from the tire size and axle ratio configuration in the PCM Vehicle Identification (VID) block. The PCM provides the Instrument Cluster (IC) with the vehicle speed data over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) bus. The IC monitors the vehicle speed input and commands the speedometer with a corresponding movement of the pointer.
The IC sets DTC U0100 in continuous memory if the VSS data is not received for more than 5 seconds and the speedometer does not operate, indicating 0 MPH. If VSS data is missing or invalid for less than 5 seconds, the speedometer stops registering vehicle speed changes and freezes at the last position on the gauge.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- PCM
- IC
PINPOINT TEST E: THE SPEEDOMETER IS INOPERATIVE
-------------------------------------------------
E1 CARRY OUT THE IC GAUGES ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger.
- Select the IC speedometer (SPDOMETER) active command. Select and scroll the speedometer to 20%, 50% and 70%.
- Does the speedometer indicate approximately 24 mph at 20%, 60 mph at 50% and 84 mph at 70%?
Yes
GO to E2.
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
E2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO SELF-TEST
- Retrieve the recorded DTCs from the PCM Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
- Are any DTCs retrieved?
Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information.
No
GO to E3.
-------------------------------------------------
E3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC SELF-TEST
- Retrieve the recorded DTCs from the IC self-test.
- Is DTC U0100 retrieved?
Yes
GO to Pinpoint Test AK. Pinpoint Tests AK: DTC U0100
No
INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to Computers and Control Systems. TEST the system for normal operation.
