Pinpoint Test C: Both High Beams Are Inoperative
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 85, Headlamps/Autolamps for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number
Normal Operation
When the multifunction switch is placed in the HIGH BEAM position with the headlamps on, the multifunction switch routes voltage to the Smart Junction Box (SJB). The SJB then routes voltage to the high beams.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Fuse
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Multifunction switch
- SJB
PINPOINT TEST C: BOTH HIGH BEAMS ARE INOPERATIVE
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
-------------------------------------------------
C1 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE HIGH BEAM INDICATOR
- Ignition OFF.
- Place the headlamp switch in the HEADLAMPS ON position.
- Place the multifunction switch in the HIGH BEAM position.
- Does the high beam indicator illuminate?
Yes
GO to C4.
No
VERIFY the SJB fuse 14 (15A) is OK. If OK, GO to C2. If not OK, REFER to the Wiring Diagrams to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. Diagrams By Number
-------------------------------------------------
C2 BYPASS THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH
- Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
- Disconnect: Multifunction Switch C202b.
- Connect a fused jumper wire between the multifunction switch C202b-6, circuit SBP23 (WH/RD), harness side and the multifunction switch C202b-7, circuit CLF27 (GN/BN), harness side.
- Do the high beams illuminate?
Yes
REMOVE the jumper wire. INSTALL a new multifunction switch. REFER to Steering Column. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REMOVE the jumper wire. GO to C3.
-------------------------------------------------
C3 CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH HIGH BEAM OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect: SJB C2280b.
- Measure the resistance between the multifunction switch C202b-7, circuit CLF27 (GN/BN), harness side and the SJB C2280b-25, circuit CLF27 (GN/BN), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to C5.
No
REPAIR circuit CLF27 (GN/BN) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
C4 CHECK THE SJB HIGH BEAM OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect: SJB C2280a.
- Disconnect: RH Headlamp C1041.
- Measure the resistance between the RH headlamp C1041-3, circuit CBP14 (VT/OG), harness side and the SJB C2280a-25, circuit CBP14 (VT/OG), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to C5.
No
REPAIR circuit CBP14 (VT/OG) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
C5 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION
- Disconnect all the SJB connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to Body Control Systems. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
