Pinpoint Test E: The Headlamps Are On Continuously
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 85, Headlamps/Autolamps for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number
Normal Operation
When the headlamp switch is placed in the HEADLAMPS ON position, the headlamp switch routes voltage to the multifunction switch.
When the multifunction switch is in the LOW BEAM position, the multifunction switch routes voltage to the Smart Junction Box (SJB), which then routes voltage to the LH and RH low beams.
When the multifunction switch is in the HIGH BEAM position, the multifunction switch routes voltage to the SJB, which then routes voltage to the high beams and the Instrument Cluster (IC).
- DTC B1470 (Lamp Headlamp Input Circuit Failure) - an on-demand DTC that sets when the SJB detects a short to voltage from the low beam voltage supply circuitry.
- DTC B1569 (Lamp Headlamp High-Beam Circuit Short to Battery) - an-demand DTC that sets when the SJB detects a short to voltage from the high beam voltage supply circuitry.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Headlamp switch
- Multifunction switch
- SJB
PINPOINT TEST E: THE HEADLAMPS ARE ON CONTINUOUSLY
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
-------------------------------------------------
E1 DETERMINE IF THE HIGH BEAMS ARE ILLUMINATED
NOTE: Make sure the multifunction switch is in the LOW BEAM position.
- Ignition ON.
- Is the high beam indicator illuminated?
Yes
GO to E7.
No
GO to E2.
-------------------------------------------------
E2 CHECK THE HEADLAMP SWITCH
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Headlamp Switch C205.
- Do the headlamps continue to illuminate?
Yes
GO to E3.
No
INSTALL a new headlamp switch. REFER to Headlamp Switch Service and Repair. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
E3 CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH (LOW BEAMS)
- Disconnect: Multifunction Switch C202b.
- Do the headlamps continue to illuminate?
Yes
GO to E5.
No
GO to E4.
-------------------------------------------------
E4 CHECK THE HEADLAMP SWITCH OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Measure the voltage between the multifunction switch C202b-8, circuit CLS24 (BN/WH), harness side and ground.
- Is any voltage present?
Yes
REPAIR circuit CLS24 (BN/WH) for a short to voltage. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
INSTALL a new multifunction switch. REFER to Steering Column. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
E5 CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH LOW BEAM OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Disconnect: SJB C2280c.
- Do the headlamps continue to illuminate?
Yes
GO to E6.
No
REPAIR circuit CLF18 (BU/WH) for a short to voltage. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
E6 CHECK THE SJB LOW BEAM OUTPUT CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Disconnect: SJB C2280a.
- Does either headlamp continue to illuminate?
Yes
REPAIR circuit CBP04 (VT) (LH headlamp) or circuit CBP03 (GY) (RH headlamp) as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
GO to E10.
-------------------------------------------------
E7 CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH
- Disconnect: Multifunction Switch C202b.
- Do the headlamps continue to illuminate?
Yes
GO to E8.
No
INSTALL a new multifunction switch. REFER to Steering Column. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
E8 CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH HIGH BEAM OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Disconnect: SJB C2280b.
- Do the headlamps continue to illuminate?
Yes
GO to E9.
No
REPAIR circuit CLF27 (GN/BN) for a short to voltage. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
E9 CHECK THE SJB HIGH BEAM OUTPUT CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Disconnect: SJB C2280a.
- Ignition ON.
- Do the headlamps or the high beam indicator continue to illuminate?
Yes
If the headlamps are still illuminated, REPAIR circuit CBP14 (VT/OG) for a short to voltage. TEST the system for normal operation.
If the high beam indicator is still illuminated, REPAIR circuit SBR14 (BN/RD) for a short to voltage. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
GO to E10.
-------------------------------------------------
E10 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION
- Disconnect all the SJB connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to Body Control Systems. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
