Starting System: Description and Operation
Starting System
The starting system consists of the following:
- Starter motor
- Starter relay
- Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch (manual transmission only)
- Digital Transmission Range (TR) sensor (automatic transmission only).
Starter Motor
The starter motor:
- is a permanent-magnet, gear reduction, 12V DC motor.
- has an integral starter solenoid.
Starter Relay
The starter relay:
- is a mini ISO relay.
- switches power to the starter solenoid to engage the starter motor when it is provided a ground through the PCM.
Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) Switch
The CPP switch (manual transmission only):
- completes the circuit to the starter ISO relay and provides a signal to the PCM when the clutch pedal is depressed.
Digital Transmission Range (TR) Sensor
The digital TR sensor (automatic transmission only):
- completes the circuit to the starter ISO relay and provides a signal to the PCM when the transmission is in PARK or NEUTRAL.
Starter System - Operation
When the ignition switch is turned to the START position the starter relay switches power to the starter solenoid causing the starter motor to engage as long as:
- the clutch pedal is depressed (manual transmission only).
- the digital TR sensor is in PARK or NEUTRAL (automatic transmission only).
- the anti-theft system is disabled (if equipped).
