PINPOINT TEST D: EPC SOLENOID
NOTE: Refer to the Transmission Vehicle Harness Connector illustration within the Transmission Connector Layouts Transmission Connector Layouts procedure.
NOTE: Refer to the Transmission Internal Harness Connector illustration within the Transmission Connector Layouts Transmission Connector Layouts procedure.
NOTE: Read and record all DTCs.
-------------------------------------------------
D1 ELECTRONIC DIAGNOSTICS
- Select PARK.
- Ignition OFF.
- Check to make sure the transmission harness connector is fully seated, terminals are fully engaged in the connector and in good condition before proceeding.
- Connect the scan tool.
- Ignition ON.
- Access the transmission PIDs.
- Is the scan tool able to access the transmission PIDs?
Yes
GO to D2.
No
REPEAT procedure to access the transmission PIDs. If the scan tool did not access the transmission PIDs, REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information for diagnosis of PCM.
-------------------------------------------------
D2 SOLENOID FUNCTIONAL TEST
- Install the Transmission Fluid Pressure Gauge into the Electronic Pressure Control (EPC) tap.
- Monitor pressure gauge.
- Warm up engine to operating temperature.
- Raise engine speed to 1,500 rpm.
- Command the LINEDSD PID to change the line pressure.
- Does the pressure reading match the commanded pressure?
Yes
CLEAR the DTCs.
No
GO to D3.
-------------------------------------------------
D3 CHECK FOR BATTERY VOLTAGE
- Remove the transmission fluid pan. Refer to Fluid Pan, Gasket and Filter Fluid Pan, Gasket and Filter.
- Visually inspect all wires and connectors for damage.
- Disconnect the EPC solenoid internal harness connector.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between EPC solenoid internal harness C199-11 and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
GO to D4.
No
CHECK for open or short circuit in harness.
-------------------------------------------------
D4 ELECTRICAL SIGNAL CHECK
- Measure the voltage between EPC solenoid C199-11 and C199-12 component side internal harness.
- Turn the solenoids ON and OFF, while monitoring the voltage reading on the volt meter, and the solenoid state on the scan tool (ON and OFF).
- Does the voltage and solenoid state change?
Yes
GO to D5.
No
CHECK for open or short circuit in harness or PCM.
-------------------------------------------------
D5 CHECK SOLENOID RESISTANCE AT SOLENOID
- Measure the resistance between terminal 1 and terminal 2 at the EPC solenoid. Resistance should be between 3.7-7.2 ohms.
- Is the resistance within specifications?
Yes
GO to D6.
No
INSTALL a new solenoid and install the transmission fluid pan.
-------------------------------------------------
D6 CHECK SOLENOID FOR SHORT TO GROUND
- Measure the resistance of the EPC solenoid using the following chart.
- Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes
REFER to the Diagnosis by Symptom Index in Diagnosis By Symptom Diagnosis By Symptom for pressure concerns.
No
INSTALL a new solenoid and install the transmission fluid pan.
