Removal - Transmission
Transmission - Rear Wheel Drive (RWD)
1. Remove the upper gearshift lever, the outer gearshift lever boot and the console as an assembly. For additional information, refer to Gearshift Lever and Boot Service and Repair.
2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Vehicle Jacking and Lifting.
3. If transmission disassembly is required, remove the drain plug and drain the transmission fluid.
- Install the drain plug after draining all the fluid.
- Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
4. NOTE: To maintain initial driveshaft balance, index-mark the driveshaft yoke to the axle flange, so they can be installed in their original positions.
Remove the driveshaft.
5. Disconnect the wire harness from the crossmember.
6. Position a suitable jack under the transmission. Secure the transmission to the jack with a safety strap.
7. Remove the 6 crossmember bolts.
8. Remove the 2 transmission mount nuts and the crossmember.
9. Remove the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) bracket nut and the bracket from the extension housing.
10. Remove the 2 transmission mount bolts and the transmission mount.
11. Vehicles equipped with the 4.0L engine, remove the catalytic converter Y-pipe. For additional information, refer to Exhaust System &/or Catalytic Converter.
12. Remove the fuel line/wiring harness bracket nut and remove the bracket from the transmission stud.
13. Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector and the reverse lamp switch electrical connector.
14. Detach the wiring harness from the transmission.
15. NOTICE: Do not allow the starter to hang freely or damage to the wiring may occur.
Remove the 3 bolts from the starter motor. Using mechanic's wire, position the starter aside.
16. Using the Hydraulic Line Disconnect Tool, disconnect the clutch hydraulic tube.
17. Using a suitable jack, support the engine.
18. NOTE: Lower the transmission enough to gain access to the upper transmission-to-engine bolts.
Remove the 9 transmission-to-engine bolts.
- Tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
19. Pull the transmission rearward until the input shaft is clear of the pressure plate, then lower the transmission from the vehicle.
