Visual Inspection

Visual Inspection

This inspection will identify modifications or additions to the vehicle operating system that may affect diagnosis.

Inspect vehicle for non-Ford approved add-on devices such as:

- Electronic add-on items
- Vehicle modifications

Any items not installed correctly affect PCM or transmission function. Pay particular attention to add-on wiring splices in the PCM harness or transmission wiring harness, abnormal tire size or axle ratio changes.

Selector Lever Cable Check

Check for a misadjustment in the selector lever cable by matching the detents in the selector lever with those in the transmission.

Hydraulic leakage at the manual control valve can cause delay in engagements and/or slipping while operating if the cable is not correctly adjusted. Refer to Automatic Transaxle/Transmission External Controls Selector Lever Cable Adjustment for selector lever cable adjustment.

Check TSBs

Refer to all TSBs that pertain to the transmission concerns, and follow the procedure as outlined.

Carry Out Quick Test

After a road test, with the engine and transmission at normal operating temperature and before disconnecting any connectors, use the scan tool to perform the self-test procedure. Refer to Computers and Control Systems for diagnosis and testing of the PCM system.
