Driveshaft - Rear Two-Piece
Driveshaft - Rear Two-Piece
Removal
All driveshafts
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Jacking and Lifting Service and Repair.
2. Index-mark the driveshaft to the rear axle pinion flange.
3. NOTE: These fasteners have an adhesive patch on the threads. New fasteners are required for installation.
Remove and discard the 4 driveshaft-to-pinion flange bolts and disconnect the rear driveshaft section.
4. Support the coupling shaft and remove the 2 center bearing bracket bolts.
Vehicles with fixed circular flange transmission interface
5. NOTE: These fasteners have an adhesive patch on the threads. New fasteners are required for installation.
Index-mark the driveshaft flange and transmission companion flange. Remove and discard the 4 front driveshaft bolts.
6. Remove the driveshaft.
Vehicles with slip yoke transmission interface
7. Index-mark the driveshaft slip yoke and the transmission tailshaft.
8. NOTE: Do not allow the output shaft to rotate while moving the driveshaft rearward.
Lower the driveshaft and slide it rearward off of the transmission output shaft.
Installation
Vehicles with fixed circular flange transmission interface
1. Using the index marks, position the driveshaft.
2. Install the 4 new front driveshaft bolts.
- Tighten the new bolts to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft).
Vehicles with slip yoke transmission interface
3. Inspect the extension housing seal for damage. Install a new seal as necessary. For additional information, refer to Automatic Transaxle/Transmission - 4R70E/4R75E Extension Housing Seal or Automatic Transaxle/Transmission - TorqShift(R) Extension Housing Seal.
4. Lubricate the transmission output shaft spline with grease and position the slip yoke on the transmission output shaft.
5. Check to see if a paint mark is present on the front driveshaft and on the end of the transmission output shaft.
6. NOTE: Depending on the paint markings, there are 2 methods of indexing the driveshaft and the output shaft.
Install the driveshaft.
1. Preferred method - align the factory-made paint marks on the output shaft and driveshaft and position the driveshaft in the transmission.
2. Alternate method - align the index marks that were created in the removal process and position the driveshaft in the transmission.
All driveshafts
7. Support the coupling shaft and position the center bearing and bracket, making sure of proper alignment.
8. Install the 2 center bearing bracket bolts.
- Tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).
9. Install the rear driveshaft section.
10. Position the driveshaft flange yoke on the pinion flange with the index marks aligned and install the 4 driveshaft to pinion flange bolts in the sequence shown.
- Tighten the 4 new bolts in the sequence shown to 112 Nm (83 lb-ft).
