Pinpoint Test L: Cannot Configure/Disable The MyKey(TM) Feature
MyKey(R) Restrictions on Vehicle Operation
Pinpoint Test L: Cannot Configure/Disable The MyKey(TM) Feature
Normal Operation
When the MyKey(TM) is used to operate the vehicle, the feature restricts several of the vehicle functions in order to promote good driving practices for the MyKey(TM) driver. Chimes sound and the audio system mutes if the safety belt is unbuckled. If the vehicle is low on fuel, chimes sound. Specific driver assistant functions are not allowed to be turned off, if configured by the MyKey(TM) feature. The audio volume can be configured to a limited value. Vehicle speed can be limited and chimes can be configured to sound when specific speeds are attained. The control functions for the MyKey(TM) feature are contained in the Instrument Cluster (IC). The IC (Instrument Cluster) initiates the key interrogation sequence of the MyKey(TM) when the key is turned to the ON or START position. If a key is inserted into the ignition lock cylinder and either a MyKey(TM) menu does not appear in the message center and/or the MyKey(TM) with restricted status cannot be configured or disabled, it may be due to one of the possible causes listed below.
NOTE: The remote start system may or may not be programmed to a MyKey(TM) restricted key status. If it is not programmed to a MyKey(TM) restricted key status, the IC (Instrument Cluster) recognizes it as the last possible remaining admin key. If it is programmed to a MyKey(TM) restricted key status and the vehicle is remote started, the IC (Instrument Cluster) displays the MyKey(TM) welcome message. In this case, the key that is inserted into the ignition lock cylinder may be mistaken for a MyKey(TM). This can only occur if the remote start system is non-Ford approved. If it is Ford approved, the vehicle stalls as soon as a door is opened or the vehicle is shifted into gear, causing the driver to insert their key and cycle it to the ON position.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Unlimited key mode is turned on
- MyKey(TM) restricted key in the ignition lock cylinder
- No MyKey(TM) restricted keys programmed into the IC (Instrument Cluster)
- Vehicle was remote started by a non-Ford approved remote start system
- IC (Instrument Cluster)
PINPOINT TEST L : CANNOT CONFIGURE/DISABLE THE MYKEY(TM) FEATURE
L1 CHECK THE UNLIMITED KEY MODE STATUS
NOTE: Make sure the vehicle is not remote started. If the vehicle is remote started, the remote start system may have been programmed as a MyKey(TM) and therefore the program/configure/disable function is inoperative. This should not occur if the vehicle is equipped with a Ford approved remote start system. If the remote start system type cannot be verified, it is safer to make sure the vehicle is not remote started.
- Ignition OFF.
- Connect the scan tool.
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC (Instrument Cluster) DataLogger.
- Review the IC (Instrument Cluster) PID UNL_KEY_MODE.
Does IC (Instrument Cluster) PID UNL_KEY_MODE display "Disable"?
Yes
GO to L2.
No
DISABLE the unlimited key mode. REFER to Spare Key Programming - Unlimited Key Mode .
L2 DETERMINE THE STATUS OF THE KEY IN THE IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER
- Ignition OFF.
- Ignition ON.
- Observe the message center.
Does the message center display "MYKEY ACTIVE, DRIVE SAFELY"?
Yes
The MyKey(TM) restricted key is in the ignition lock cylinder. An admin key must be used to configure/disable a MyKey(TM) restricted key. REFER to MyKey(R) Programming if it is desired to configure or disable the MyKey(TM) Feature.
No
The key in the ignition lock cylinder is an admin key. GO to L3.
L3 REVIEW THE MESSAGE CENTER INFORMATION
- Using the admin key in the ignition lock cylinder, press the SETUP button on the message center control buttons until SYSTEM CHECK is displayed.
- Press RESET to review the message center information to determine if there is a MyKey(TM) restricted key programmed into the IC (Instrument Cluster).
Does the IC (Instrument Cluster) message center indicate there is a MyKey(TM) restricted key programmed into the IC (Instrument Cluster) ?
Yes
If the admin key in the ignition lock cylinder cannot configure/disable the MyKey(TM) restricted key, GO to L4.
No
There are no MyKey(TM) restricted keys programmed. REFER to MyKey(R) Programming to program a MyKey(TM) restricted key.
L4 CHECK FOR CORRECT IC (Instrument Cluster) OPERATION
- Disconnect the IC (Instrument Cluster) connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the IC (Instrument Cluster) connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new IC (Instrument Cluster). RESET the parameters in both the IC (Instrument Cluster) and the Transmission Control Module (TCM). REFER to Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) Parameter Reset . PROGRAM the Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) keys into the new IC (Instrument Cluster). REFER to Integrated Keyhead Transmitter (IKT) Key Programming Using Diagnostic Equipment . TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
