Pinpoint Test J: The Vehicle Does Not Start
Normal Operation
The Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) uses a visual anti-theft indicator located in the Instrument Cluster (IC). This anti-theft indicator proves out for 3 seconds when the key is turned to the ON or START position under normal operation. If there is a PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) concern, this anti-theft indicator either flashes rapidly or glows steadily (for more than 3 seconds) when the key is turned to the ON or START position. Retrieve DTCs from the IC (Instrument Cluster) and the Transmission Control Module (TCM) to determine if there are any PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) -related DTCs that can indicate the cause of the no-start.
A PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) no-start can involve a vehicle no-start due to either the fuel injectors not operating or the Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (eCVT) not cranking the engine (or both). A low battery voltage can cause the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) to allow the eCVT (Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission) to crank the engine, but can keep the fuel injectors from operating. Also, a key read concern can keep the fuel injectors from operating, while a TCM (Transmission Control Module) -PCM ID concern can be at fault if there is no starter operation, although a key read concern can also be the cause of an inoperative eCVT (Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission) (starter). PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) also flashes the anti-theft indicator every 2 seconds at key off to act as a visual theft deterrent. The anti-theft indicator operation is controlled by the IC (Instrument Cluster).
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Starting system concern
- PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) concern
PINPOINT TEST J : THE VEHICLE DOES NOT START
J1 CHECK FOR COMMUNICATION WITH THE TCM (Transmission Control Module) AND THE IC (Instrument Cluster)
- Connect the scan tool.
- Ignition ON.
- Carry out the network test using the scan tool.
Does the scan tool establish communication with the TCM (Transmission Control Module) and the IC (Instrument Cluster) ?
Yes
GO to J2.
No
REFER to Information Bus to diagnose the module that is not communicating with the scan tool.
J2 CHECK FOR IC (Instrument Cluster) DTCs
- Retrieve the IC (Instrument Cluster) continuous and on-demand DTCs.
Are any IC (Instrument Cluster) DTCs present?
Yes
REFER to DTC Charts Antitheft and Alarm Systems.
No
The no-start condition is not PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) -related. REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information to diagnose the cause of the no-start condition.
