ISSUE
Some 2012-2013 F-Super Duty F-450 and F-550 Chassis Cab vehicles equipped with a 6.8L engine and built on 12/16/2011 and through 12/6/2012 may exhibit engine RPM fluctuations during SEIC while running the PTO.

ACTION
Follow Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) to the latest calibration using IDS release 83.02 and higher. Calibration files may also be obtained at the website.

Vehicles running under high variable loads, such as pumps, compressors, and welders, may also exhibit an engine speed flare, and/or slow recovery back to PlO set speed after release of such variable loads. The calibration update contains improvement actions and enhancements to address the following:

1. Enable PlO operation with engine coolant temperature at 5 °C (40 °F).

2. Reduce engine RPM fluctuations while in PTO mode.

3. Allow quicker recovery back to PlO set speed after variable loads on apply or release.

NOTE

PLEASE ADVISE THE CUSTOMER THAT THIS VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH AN ADAPTIVE TRANSMISSION SHIFT STRATEGY WHICH ALLOWS THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER TO LEARN THE TRANSMISSION'S UNIQUE PARAMETERS AND IMPROVE SHIFT QUALITY. WHEN THE ADAPTIVE STRATEGY IS RESET, THE COMPUTER WILL BEGIN A RE-LEARNING PROCESS. THIS RE-LEARNING PROCESS MAY RESULT IN FIRMER THAN NORMAL UPSHIFTS AND DOWNSHIFTS FOR SEVERAL DAYS.
