Removal

Floor Console Assembly:






1. Remove floor console.
- A console panel front support is bolted to the upper surface of the transmission tunnel just forward of the transmission shift lever. A console panel rear support assembly is riveted to the upper surface of tunnel just rearward of the parking brake.
- The floor console assembly attaches to these supports as well as to the instrument panel at Its upper, forward end. A console top panel assembly attaches to the console at the forward end of the top panel and through the console to the support assembly at its rear end.

Removal
A. Disconnect battery ground cable.
B. Remove four screws which attach console top panel assembly to console assembly.
C. Lift console top panel assembly off console assembly and disconnect two electrical connections.
D. Remove two screws which attach rear end of console assembly to console panel support assembly.
E. Remove four screws which attach console assembly to console panel front support.
F. Remove four screws which attach console assembly to instrument panel.
G. Lift console assembly off transmission tunnel.

NOTE:
- The console assembly includes a snap-in finish panel which conceals the A/C-heater control assembly attaching screws. To gain access to these screws, it is not necessary to remove the floor console.

2. Remove instrument panel and lay it on front seat.

Removal
A. Disconnect battery ground cable.
B. Underhood, disconnect all wiring connections from main wiring harness (14401). Disengage wiring harness rubber grommet from dash panel and push wiring harness and connections into passenger compartment
C. Remove floor console.

Instrument Panel:






D. Remove steering column louver shroud extension by removing two screws.
E. Remove two screws and remove steering column opening cover.
F. Drop glove compartment door assembly down by opening door and squeezing sides of glove compartment together to disengage retainer tabs.
G. Remove console.
H. Remove defroster grille by snapping out.
I. Remove one screw from each speaker grille and snap them out.
J. Remove four screws and remove steering column opening reinforcement.
K. Remove one attaching screw from each end of instrument panel at lower edge.
L. Remove brake pedal support nut.
M. Remove five screws along front top edge of instrument panel.
N. Pull instrument panel away from cowl. Disconnect any remaining wire connectors on control cables.

2.3L Heater Hose Routing:






3. Drain engine coolant from cooling system. Remove hoses from heater core. Plug hoses and core.
4. Remove screw attaching air inlet duct and blower housing assembly support bracket to cowl top panel.
5. Disconnect vacuum supply hose (black) from inline vacuum check valve in engine compartment.
6. Disconnect blower motor wire harness from resistor and motor head.
7. Working under the hood, remove two nuts retaining heater assembly to dash panel.
8. In passenger compartment, remove screw attaching heater assembly support bracket to cowl top panel.
9. Remove one screw retaining bracket below heater assembly to dash panel.
10. Carefully pull heater assembly away from dash panel. Remove heater assembly from vehicle.






11. Carefully remove heater assembly.
12. Remove four heater core access cover attaching screws and remove access cover from case.
13. Lift heater core and seal from case.
14. Remove seal from heater core tubes.
