ENGINE COOLANT - 2.5L HSC - OVERHEATING DUE TO IMPROPER REFILL PROCEDURE

Article No. 89-6-10

FORD: 1986-89 TAURUS

ISSUE: An engine that overheats may be caused by air pockets forming inside the cylinder head or loss of engine coolant. Air pockets may form after servicing the head gasket, heater system or draining the cooling system if an improper coolant refill procedure is used. Loss of coolant may be due to "after boil" (coolant heating up after the engine has stopped). Engine overheating may lead to pre-ignition that could melt the piston domes, spark plug tips or crack the valve seats.

ACTION: Check the cooling system for leaks and service as required. Proceed to refill the cooling system as described in the Taurus/Sable Shop Manual, Section 27-01. After the cooling system has been properly refilled, install a new radiator cap.

CAUTION: THE VENT PLUG ON THE WATER OUTLET CONNECTION (THERMOSTAT HOUSING) MUST BE REMOVED TO VENT ANY AIR TRAPPED IN THE CYLINDER HEAD.
